The main purpose of this study is to examine how an Anti-Smoking Program can affect self-esteem and no-smoking resolution, and how it can change the amount of smoking when it is applied to girl's teenage smokers in middle schools.
In this Anti-Smoking Program, the level of no-smoking resolution and self-esteem and the change in the amount of smoking are the three criterion variables.
Eighteen smokers in the eighth grade of a girls' middle school participated in this study. Nine of them were randomly chosen as the experimental group, and the rest as the control group. The experimental group had preliminary meetings before the main program and took a pre-test. The main program was composed of eleven sessions which took 90-100 minutes each. After the experimental group had gone through the main program, there were two evaluations and three more meetings. The control group only participated in the pre-test the evaluations after the main program.
As the measurement tools, 『Evaluation of no-smoking resolution』 and 『Test of self-esteem』 were performed on both the experimental group and the control group. The NicCheck I Test Strips was used for scientifical measurement of the amount of smoking for the experimental group.
After the Anti-Smoking Program, t-test was used to compare the results of tests before and after the program and to compare the experimental group and the control group.
1) The t-test showed that there is a significant difference between the two groups in the level of self-esteem at the 5% significance level(p<.05).
2) The t-test showed that for the experimental group, there is a significant difference in the level of no-smoking resolution before and after the program at the 1% significance level(p<.01). Also the t-test showed that after the Anti-smoking program there is a significant difference between the two groups in no-smoking resolution at the 1 % significance level (p<.01).
3) The ordinary times smoking amount of the experimental group smoked 6.67 cigarettes but after the secondary stage of the program, all of the five smokers(3 transferred, 1 studying abroad) quit smoking.
Therefore, a significant increase in the level of no smoking resolution and increase of self-esteem has positive effect on decreasing the amount of smoking.
It is considered that a concrete knowledge on the harmfulness of smoking, positive self-suggestion, strategical training of self-control, training of neglecting smoking, communication skills, no-smoking counselling, continuous observation, urinal test with the NicCheck I Test Strips were important factors of the anti-smoking program. Also the teacher's receptive attitude toward the students played an important role in the successful results of the Anti-Smoking program.
