The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of music instruction applying Dalcroze Eurhythmics on the ability of understanding and expression and attitudes of children in music.
Research problems set up for this study were as follows:
1. What are the effects of music instruction using Dalcroze Eurhythmics on the ability of understanding and expression and attitudes of children in music?
2. Do the effects of music instruction using Dalcroze Eurhythmics on the ability of understanding and expression and attitudes of children vary according to the level of children's GPA?
3. Do the effects of music instruction using Dalcroze Eurhythmics on the ability of understanding and expression and attitudes of children vary according to the gender of children?
Subjects of this study were 68 third graders from two classes of a primary school located in Pusan. The training was practiced to the two groups respectively, each group of 34 students for three weeks. The music instruction for one group was utilizing Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and the other practiced so-called traditional method. Children of both experimental groups have learned the same contents, and the ability of understanding and expression and attitudes toward music were observed before and after the training period. The results were statistically analyzed using MANCOVA and two-way ANOVA.
The conclusions of this study are as follows:
1. It is effective to apply Dalcroze Eurhythmics to primary school students to improve children's ability of understanding and expression and attitudes toward music.
2. It is desirable to apply Dalocroze Eurhythmics in music instruction especially to enhance the ability of understanding and attitudes toward music of children with low-level GPA.
3. The effects of applying Dalcroze Eurhythmics in music instruction do not vary according to the gender of children. Therefore it is helpful to improve the ability of understanding and expression and attitudes toward music regardless of the gender of children.
