The internet is a very useful virtual-media in our daily lives. The internet makes our lives more convenient : we can exchange information, enjoy entertainment, meet people in the distance, listen to good music, purchase goods for need through the internet. But internet addictive usage can be an important issue in terms of social and psychological side effects.
This study focuses on the internet addiction which causes problems about view-points, schema of consciousness and behaviors of middle school students. Another points of this study are to analyze internet-related effective factors so that we can understand our adolescents in cyber space and to accumulate the basic data about information & communication ethic to prevent internet-related side effects at home and school.
To carry out this study, the issues are as follows:
1. How is the general condition of using internet of middle school students?
2. Is there any difference for internet addiction by gender and grade?
2-1. Is there any difference for internet addiction by gender?
2-2. Is there any difference for internet addiction by grade?
3. How is the influence among the effective factors of internet addiction of middle school students (individual characters, home backgrounds, social environments)?
This research was carried with a population made by 582 boys and girls of middle school at Incheon concerned gender and grade among the internet users. The testing papers are used for the analysis about internet usage, addiction and effective factors.
The scale used in this study is 5-point-scale of the Center for Online and Internet Addiction of Young. This scale is modified for the purpose and character of this study.
The preceeding methods for effective factors of internet addiction are used. The effective factors of internet addiction can be divided into several aspects; one is individual characters of self-esteem, self-effectiveness in cyber space and self-control and the other is home backgrounds of parents' acceptant behaviors or disapproval. The last aspect is social support of parents, teachers and friends.
These data collected like above were analyzed of the way using SPSS Window 10.0 statistical program which has t-test, F-test and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The findings of this study can be summarized as the following.
First, most of middle school students use the internet more than 2 hours every day to play game, chat and entertain rather than homework or study. Most of them take strick cautions about internet addictive usage for themselves. But not a little respondents don't have any wills to improve.
Second, the result shows that 48.5% of respondents are internet addicted. This rate is attributed to the high-speed network online, spread internet-using people and increased necessity of internet.
Third, there aren't meaningful internet usage differences among gender and grade of middle school students.
Forth, among 8 independent variables of effective factors for internet addiction, this study indicates that self-effectiveness is the most important factor. Self-esteem and parents' support are succeeded. That is, the students who has high self-effectiveness in cyber space, low self-esteem and less parents' support is highly internet-addicted.
