Contemporary people have little access to nature due to rapid development and industrialization, resulting in being cold-hearted. As a fundamental solution to overcome such a problem, many educational opportunities to understand the relationship between human beings and nature and to experience nature should be given to children, through which they can develop proper attitudes and values toward nature.
This study was designed to analyse dyeing craft presented in middle schools as one course of nature-affinitive art education based on the 7th Art Curriculum of middle schools, and to present an instructional plan through courses using loess which is a material to lead easy access to nature.
Also, this study provided a nature-affinitive art education plan to teacher, who have a poor understanding of dyeing craft. It was intended to provide effective instruction to teach fundamental knowledge and methodology. And it was intended to find a method to lead proper experience, expression and appreciation of nature in order to cultivate qualities of creative expression and nature-loving attitude.
For this, a general theoretical background of dyeing was reviewed to understand wisdom and attitude of our ancestors who lived together with nature. The current art curriculum was analysed to present an advanced model of loess dyeing craft course to improve art education.
To diagnose a current situation and problems of nature-affinitive education at schools, art textbooks for 1st and 2nd grade of middle schools coming under the 7th middle school art curriculum was anaylsed followed by an interview using a questionnaire. As a result of analysing art textbooks, it was found that craft course focuses on pottery and paper craft, and for dyeing craft, it was confined to explanation as traditional craft works, and of Holchigiyeom for and application to courses.
The results of interviews with students are presented as follows: of six areas of art, crafts that contains a dyeing course were most favored by students and most of students responded that they have no experience of dyeing. Also they were very interested in dyeing using mud, a natural material, which is common but they never thought that it can be used for dyeing. 63% of students responded that it would be interesting. And, 60% students responded that it would be interesting to make daily necessities using loess dying. This shows a high degree of students' interest, that is, indicating that development of a new material for art education is necessary.
According to the review, and effective teaching plan has been found to give a variety of art experience to students. As use of a chemical dyeing material causes a destruction of ecosystem, a model of natural loess dyeing craft course was presented to help them recognize the importance of nature. Also, for better understanding of the relationship between art and living, making daily necessities using cloth dyed with loess was presented, and a course model was presented for contemporary expression through appling a principle of traditional patchwork wrapping cloth to help them to learn wisdom and attitude of ancestors.
All of the above has a great meaning in feeling of emotion of ancestors, application of final works to daily living and succession of national tradition for students. Teachers should provide values to search methods to find art from nature and apply it to nature.
Teachers should try to induce students to participate in new expressional activities for better effect of art education through development of various materials that lead interests of students along with theoretical establishment using bibliography. They should take great pains to develop the potential abilities of students and work towards the perfection of education.
