Small group discussion based on real life problem solving takes realistic contexts as starting point as sources for mathematics leaning and puts systematically real experience in mathematics education. This mathematics education emphasizes applicability and relevance of mathematics in real-world situation and supposes that children learn mathematics through everyday experiences and problem solving. Therefore in this program, mathematics is considered as a tool for understanding reality.
The purpose of this study were:
    (1) to investigate the effects of small group discussion program based on Small group discussion based on real life problem solving on young children's number operations
    (2) to analyze children's strategies which they were used to solve problematic situation during small group discussion
    (3) to analyze contexts which children were difficult to solve problematic situation during small group discussion.
The subjects of this study were 24 5-year-old children(l2 control group children and 12 experimental group children) who attended a child care center in Seoul, Korea. They were from middle SES families. The instruments were pre- and post-test and materials for small group discussion. The pre- and post-test were designed to assess young children's number operations. This study used several materials for Small group discussion such as an attractive zoo model which was specially designed for this study and objects to represent people and animals which each child could manipulate by him/herself. The researcher visited the center 16 time(2 times a week for 8 weeks) and guided small group discussion on children's familiar experiences in real world situations including various number operations. One session of group discussion took about 20 minutes with 6 children. During the discussion, children were presented with the materials including a zoo model. The discussion was problematic situation that is likely to happen at zoo in which various number operations were included.
The study's results included: (1) The small group discussion based on realistic situation had significant effects on young children's number operations, especially on children's subtraction and multiplication. (2) Children's strategies which they were used to solve problematic situation during small group discussion were more various than the other studies on children's solution strategies in number operation. (3) Contexts which children were difficult to solve problematic situation during small group discussion revealed third forms. First, it were not familiar contexts. Second, it were a converse relation between multiplication and division. Third, it were getting away from the mathematics by 'escaping' into reality.
Result of this study supports that young children's number operation based on Realistic mathematics Education in the Netherlands can take place faster and with more insight. Number operation need not be a dry, isolated activity, but can become an integrated part of the children's lives. This result implies that small group discussion based on Small group discussion based on real life problem solving not only enriches children's informal mathematics knowledge but makes children easy to connect to formal mathematics.
