Samdae is one of the Yum Sangsub's work which has been read popularly and studied most by many scholars. In studying Yum Sangsub, it is impossible to exclude Samdae. And the number of studying Samdae is much more than any other contemporary writers' works.
As we saw above, Samdae is the Mr. Yum's representative work in public popularity and the scholars' interest. Most of the study of Samdae treated the book published by Ulyoo publishing company in 1947 and 1948. However, the opinion is rising now that the study should treated the newspaper serial edition not the book. Because Samdae has the realism reflected the social situation in 1931.
In this thesis I will look through the aspect of the revision the separated volume from the newspaper serial edition, and also focused on finding the changes of the internal and external aspects. In the process of research, I can get the following conclusion.
First, the external aspect of revision was compared in the change of words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, episodes and subtitles. As a result the intensity of change is most strong in the change of phrases and sentences. The reasons of change were aimed to soften the sentences and to make the terms of respect, to revise the mistakes, to ease the expression, to accord the tense, to leave out the redundancy and to add the detail explanation or substitution. Like these, there are various reasons. However, the biggest reason of these changes is the revision of writer's intentional change of context. And this is closely related with the change of internal aspect.
The internal aspects of change were compared in the change of the plot, characteristics, contents related with socialism, Japanese imperialism, and Christianity between the newspaper serial edition and the separated volume. As a result, I can get the following conclusion. In the plot the back scene added newly that Ducki moved eagerly to free his father and Byunhwa and care the old mother and her daughter. In the characteristics of the characters, Ducki appeared as a hero, and Kim Byunghwa, Cho Sanghoon, Hong Kyungae, Philsoon, and Swonjip were also changed much in their characteristics around him. In the content related with socialism, the action was decreased and the image got worse. With Christianity the text of anti-Christianity were mostly omitted, and changed in euphemistic way. In the content related with Japanese imperialism, the change of period was strongly reflected to use much anti-Japanese imperialism expressions.
The reasons of the changes of the internal aspect are that the plot proceeded in focusing on Cho Ducki, and that the writer strengthened mid-conservatism. The thing which cannot be excluded is Yum Sangsub changed his eclecticism which was his basic idea of creation. This was the result of his expect of the social stability after liberty from Japan.
In this thesis I just treated the changes of internal and external aspects in revision of Samdae. However I want to leave the study of his intention considering his period recognition to other critics. The thing focused in this thesis is that there are many differences in internal and external aspects between the newspaper serial edition and the separated volume which was revised after liberty. And these differences make the change of characteristics, thoughts, and the relation between people in the book. The examples in this thesis could be specific analysis not the whole. Therefore the analysis on the revision of Yum Sangsub's works should continue, and it is reasonable to study the newspaper serial edition in studying the novel as a social novel or studying it in the conscious stream of Yum Sangsub in Japanese imperialism.
