In the 21st century, the aging of population will be accelerated more and leisure time in the old age also will be increased continuously. In general, the extension of the old age implies that old people can be relieved of social and home roles and responsibilities and enjoy their time comfortably. However, proper preparation of social conditions to spend their leisure time usefully will cause old people to spend their leisure time tediously and it can ultimately have a negative effect on the quality of life in the old age. Therefore, the individual problem about whether they spend their leisure time in the old age usefully involves the social problem about the significance of leisure time in the old age.
This study was attempted to examine the relation of the type of old people's leisure activities with the life satisfaction and effects of those activities on the life satisfaction, and to provide data to enjoy their leisure time satisfactorily and to enhance the life satisfaction. The researcher of this study surveyed, analyzed, and considered the type of the old people's leisure activities and the life satisfaction for 243 old people among the old, who lived in Cheongju city of Chungbuk province and used general welfare building for the old, respect-for-age facilities, and park. The findings of this study were as follows.
First, for religious and social participation type and sociable and entertaining activities type, there was a significant difference in age, schooling career, religion, live-in-together type, pocket money, health condition, and family relation; for self-development type and comfortable and solitude activities type, there was no significant difference in any features.
With respect to participation in the type of leisure activities by features, it was shown that women was higher than men, old people with religion was higher than with no religion, and old people lived with no family was higher than with other family members. And, it was found that old people with lower age and with higher schooling career and pocket money were higher and old people with good health condition and family relation participated in leisure activities more.
Second, concerning the life satisfaction, the lower age was, the higher life satisfaction was. The higher schooling career and pocket money were, the higher life satisfaction was. Old people with religion and good health condition and family relation showed higher life satisfaction.
Third, it was found that family-centered activities, sociable and entertaining activities, self-development activities among leisure activities have affected the life satisfaction. And, the more they participate in these leisure activities, the higher their life satisfaction is. In addition, with respect to effects of leisure activities on the life satisfaction, it was revealed that family relation has the greatest impact, then came sociable and entertaining activities, and self-development activities in that order.
On the basis of these findings, suggestions to enhance old people's leisure activities and their life satisfaction are as follows.
First, considering that the type of old people's leisure activities depends on their general features, various leisure facilities should be expanded and leisure programs should be prepared so that they can select and participate in the type of leisure activities suitable for individual features. And, the support system for the type of leisure activities, in which old people participate greatly, should be strengthened positively.
Second, as general features affect the level of their life satisfaction, countermeasures to change old people's features are required. For example, considering that the higher education level is, the higher the life satisfaction is, opportunities of continuing education should be provided for old people through activation of old people class and old people academy. As the health condition is related to the life satisfaction greatly, regular practical sports to enhance their health condition should be encouraged and geriatrics hospital and home-nursing project should be activated efficiently.
Third, as family relation, sociable and entertaining activities, and self-development activities among old people's leisure activities affect the life satisfaction, programs suitable for their family relation and leisure activities at home should be developed and cultural places in community should be expanded. Most of all, in social welfare institutes and facilities in charge of the current old people's leisure activities, it is desirable to apply 3 types of leisure together. However, if there are little finances for those institutes and facilities, the program accompanied with sociable and entertaining activities and family-centered activities should be utilized.
Finally, a limitation of this study is that this study examined only type of leisure activities affecting old people's life satisfaction. Therefore, a comparative study on various factors (family, friends, social workers, leisure program, etc.) affecting their life satisfaction considering old people's features should be performed.
