The purpose of this study is to determine effects of Traditional Music Education Program on children's traditional music skills and sense of rhythm. For the purpose, this researcher raised the following research questions.
First, what trends exist in children's traditional music skills and their sense of rhythm ?
Second, what are effects of Traditional Music Education Program ?
    1) What differences in traditional music skills exist among children?
    2) What differences in the sense of rhythm among children ?
    3) What differences in traditional music skills and rhythmic sense between the experimental and control groups of children ?
To obtain answers to these questions, the researcher surveyed 60 male and female children, fully aged 5, from kindergartens located in Busan in order to know their traditional music skills and rhythmic sense. Concerning children's traditional music skills, the researcher modified Korean Traditional Music Skills Test, which was developed by Hwang In Joo (2000) and Jung Nam Hee(2002) in accordance with sections of comprehension, expression and appreciation, part of expression life, the 6th national curriculum of education. Children's sense of rhythm was tested using Rho Joo Hee's(2001) adapted version of Primary Measures of Music Audition (PMMA) developed by Gordon(1997).
The program applied here was mainly based on the sections of comprehension, expression and appreciation. The program which sought to enhance children's traditional music skills and rhythmic sense was applied over 15 sessions, 3 sessions a week and 15 to 20 minutes per session. Data collected here were statistically processed using SPSS 10.0 Program.
Results of the study can be summarized as follows.
First, male children were found higher in all sub-areas of traditional music skills, comprehension, expression and appreciation than female ones. There was little difference in the sense of rhythm between the two sexes.
Second, the experimental group who participated in Traditional Music Education Program became higher in sub-areas of traditional music skills, comprehension, expression and appreciation and in the sense of rhythm than the control group who did not participate.
