The purpose of this study is to determine effects of Pairing condition by children's sex and ability on their scaffolding and task performance.
For the purpose, this researcher raised the following research questions.
1. Are there differences in the type of scaffolding among children according to their pairing conditions?
1-1. Are there differences in the type of scaffolding between pairs of same-sex and opposite-sex children?
1-2. Are there differences in the type of scaffolding between pairs of children who are similar and different in task performance?
2. Are there differences in task performance by children according to their abilities?
2-1 Do children who are high, low and similar in task performance show changes in the performance after activities of paiting?
To obtain answers to these questions, the researcher surveyed 78 children from kindergartens located in Busan. Out of the children, 8 pairs of the same sex(four pairs of male-male, four of female-female) and another 8 of the opposite sexes(four paris of male-female, four of female -male) were first selected. The two groups of pairs included children who could perform given tasks in a short time and could not within 20 minutes(mixed-ability). Then 8 pairs of same-sex children and another 8 of opposite-sex children were selected. The two groups of pairs consisted of children who were similar in task performance. The measurement device used here was Chillkyo Play through which the time spent in task performance was calculated in seconds.
Data obtained here were statistically analyzed using Scaffolding Observation Table and SPSS/PC+ Program.
Results of the study can be summarized as follows.
First, types of scaffolding were significantly different in child pairs of the same sex rather than in those of the opposite sexes. Such significant difference was also often found in pairs of children who were different in task performance rather than those who were similar.
Second, the three groups of children(high, low and similar in task performance) all showed significant changes in task performance through activities of pairing.
