The divorced and separated families' children face a serious crisis in psychological, emotional and behavioral aspects due to parents' divorce while experiencing separation from father of mother along with sudden change in home environment. Most of the divorced families' children are likely to have such emotional difficulties as jeer friends, reproach on and complaint about father or mother, apprehensions about desertion, illusion of parents' reunion and guilty conscience. It is the most important to improve their self-esteem for them to properly cope with such emotional difficulties due to parents' divorce because an individual's self-esteem has a great effect on how they lead their lives and the improvement of self-esteem can enable them to lead more affirmative lives.
Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a group counseling program on the improvement of self-esteem for divorced families' children. The study was on the subject of 8students, from 10 to 12 years old who lived with a single parent. The session was made up of 14 times in total.
For the purpose of this study, two hypotheses were set up as follows;
First, a group counseling program will improve self-esteem of divorced and separated families' children.
Second, a group counseling program for them will decrease the negative emotional response of children for their parents' divorce.
The experimental design of this study was pre-, post design and evaluated the features of changes using Self-Esteem Scale, Children's belief about Parental Divorce Scale.
The feeling of children was dealt with importantly in the course of a group counseling. Symbolic activities were used so that they might not have any difficulty in expressing inner oppressed emotion. Meeting parents through imaginary therapy, drawing, storytelling, doll play (dolls wall attached to stick), emotional masked the play and role play were executed.
As a result of the study, it showed that there was a remarkable increase in their self-esteem(P<.001) and there was a decrease in children's negative response such as complaint about father or mother, anger, apprehensions about desertion, illusion of parents' reunion and guilty conscience.
The suggestions on the basis of the above results are as follows;
First, it is in need of the various program for harmonious development of children such as development of potentiality, formation of value system and public relationship skill by reinforcing self-esteem improvement program.
Second, it is in need of the study for counseling intervention method considering age, gender of children and family type after divorce.
Third, for maintaining meaningful effect through a group counseling program, it is in need of further program execution and long-term effect measurement.
Fourth, it is in need of development and distribution of a group counseling program which can be applied to the real scene of elementary schools for divorced families' children and training of professional counselors.
Fifth, it is in need of the study on family therapy on the subject of the child and other family members before divorce.
