Defining popular novels are those which provide experiences appealing to human beings' worldly sides and which assume a set of roles to that extent, this thesis revealed that they create meanings through "intertextuality" as mundane factors of a text easily affect other texts, and also express emotional structure of the masses through cultural codes.
The popular novels in the 1970s, the subject of this thesis, are the product of the full-fledged popular culture, and imply very significant texts showing that they are closely related to the emergence of the youth of the masses. They also illustrate the fact that the popular culture is not just tools used by those with power to inject their ideology, but has a relationship of being adjusted through production and adaptation.
Therefore, this study adopted as a key analysis framework the concept of a "compromise equilibrium" that balances "fascination" with "negation" and resolves conflicts arising between them, as popular novels are cultural texts where the ideology of the resistance stands against the ruling ideology.
To identify aesthetic nature and youth characteristics of the popular novels in the 1970s within the framework, this thesis established cultural codes of myth, sexuality, body and love, and approached them by way of a semiotic theory of culture.
"The myth of success," and "the myth of city" shown in the popular novels in the 1970s are based on "the myth of freedom," develop into "constat(concrete constants)" by iterative narrations of specific indicators, and ultimately function as a mechanism letting the masses naturally accept the bourgeois' ideology. "Freedom" becomes an indicator challenging against returning to home or social ideology in texts. With this iteration of narration of these indicators, "freedom" dissembles myths implanted as "constat" and becomes mechanism resisting myths.
The texts of popular novels in the 1970s attempted to break ruling characteristics of myths through "freedom," which is the principle of a "compromise equilibrium" that dissolves conflicts between myths and anti-myths. However, it fell short of completely breaking myths due to the dominant nature of myths, but only became a space offering cultural experiences of averting myths only in imagination.
A close look into the cultural codes of "sexuality" and "bodies" revealed that in the texts of popular novels in the 1970s, patriarchy ideology and capitalistic system combined to degrade female bodies to objects and as a result sex was commercialized. Accordingly, texts became cultural experience space where people enjoyed pleasures of watching and showing sensual bodies and sensual activities.
However, texts built novelistic devices to be free of "uneasiness about cardinal pleasures," which was shaped by social customs, and to further expand free emotions. First of all, they repeatedly made descriptions stimulating sexual feelings and at the same time described women, the subjects of sexual activities and owners of sensual bodies, as pure and virtuous heroins who adapt themselves to patriarchy ideology.
On the other hand, they grope for a compromise equilibrium by salvaging prostitutes or sexually corrupt women who are rejected by the society, or sometimes by excluding them from the society. The texts that accomodate conflicts through a compromise equilibrium became a cultural experience space strengthening patriarchy ideology. Moreover, they became a new cultural experience space that has potential of demolishing traditional ethical standards that prevent women in patriarchy systems from revealing their sexual energy through public talks.
In the texts of popular novels in the 1970s, the cultural code of "romantic love" is formed under a contrasting system of "fascination" and "negation." Indulged in momentary fascination, a couple in a romantic love, their romantic love becomes all the more fascinating because they can make an economic and reasonable success. A romantic love, however, is viewed as abominable because of economic capability and love. In texts, romantic love frequents illusions and hatreds, but settles at home in the end. This home is described as a "sweet home" comprised of small family members. The nuclear family system, established in the wake of the industrialization, is a system that further strengthens bourgeois and patriarchy ideology. Characters in the texts usually adapt themselves to those ideologies, they, after tired of worldly lives with their families, try to overcome those ideologies in diverse ways. Characters' double-faced attitudes toward their home surface via soap opera-style structures. In particular, the ending structure molded by soap operas' characteristics of "moral occult" is a device that leads to self-control adapting to the virtues of the bourgeois and patriarch ideology. At the same time, the ending structure with the moral occult awakens readers to contradictions of the ruling ideology.
This thesis pointed out that the popular novels in the 1970s, via cultural codes of freedom, sexuality, bodies and love, are a cultural experience space that helps strengthen the bourgeois and patriarch ideology. It showed that they are also a space where rejection and resistance of and against the ideology coexist. This space is also an experience space disclosing youth mindset that toughens self-regulations to adapt itself to the ruling ideology. However, in psychological points of views, this could be called a new cultural experience space that discloses youth mentality attempting to restore individual freedoms by resisting political and cultural standardization and conservative views of the old generation.
