This study aims at grasping the relationship between personality traits, work stress and job satisfaction experienced by nurses, reducing work stress of nurses and supplying the basic materials for an effective nurse administration which can enhance the job efficiency and satisfaction.
Data are collecied with the samples of 250 nurses who are working at one university hospital and one general hospital in Gwangju and allowed to take part in the research for 13 days from Aug. 31 to Sep. 12, 2001.
Research instruments include 'Standardization Personality Diagnosis Test' developed by Lee Sang-Noh(l984) and revised by this researcher, the instrument for measuring work stress developed by Kim mae-ga and Ku mi-oug(1984) and that for measuring job satisfaction developed by Paula(1978) and revised and complemented by Yang Kil-Mo (1990).
Collected data use t-test and ANOVA for verifying the difference between personality trait, work stress and job satisfaction according to the general characteristics of objects by means of SPSS Program and Stepwise Multiple Regression as the prediction variables affecting Pearson's Correlation and Job
Satisfaction to examine correlations between personality traits, work stress and job satisfaction.
The results of this research are as follows;
1. Personality traits of the objects are relatively good as mean 1.67, responsibility is 1.71, sociality 1.69, stability 1.60 and superiority 1.60 by each area.
2. Work stress score of the objects is mean 3.33 and the degree of work stress is relatively high and work burden is 3.40, work responsibility 3 37 and role conflict is 3.30 by each area.
3. The mean of job satisfaction is low as 297.Job demand by areas is highest as 3.70 and remuneration is lowest as 2.63.
4. Personality trait shows the significant differences in age (F=3.85, p= .010), marital status (t=3.93, p= .48), clinical careers (F=2 56, p= .039), position (F=3.33, p= .037), duty schedule (t=8.46, p= .004) and stress relaxing (F=3.70, p= .000).
5. The degree of work stress according to general characteristics of objects shows a significant difference in satisfaction with nursing job (F=6.74, p= .00l) and expected duration of nurse (F=3.48, p= .032).
6. The degree of job satisfaction according to general characteristics of objects show a significant difference in age (F=9.41, p= .000), marital status (t=13.09, p= .000), religion (F=8.04, p= .000). clinical careers (F=5.49, p= .000), position (F=11.47, p= .000), duty schedule (t=9.93, p= .001), monthly average income (F=7.36, p= .000), satisfaction with nursing (F=27.70, p= .000), expected duration of nurse (F=10.66, p= .000), motivation of nurse (F=7.38, p= .000) and stress relaxing (F=2.00, p= .042).
7. It is shown that the relationship between the objects' personality traits and job satisfaction has statistically significant correlations (r=.081, p= .197) and the hypothesis of this research that "there will be a relationship between personality traits and job satisfaction" is not supported.
8. It is found that correlation between work stress and job satisfaction (r= -.254 p= .000) is inappropriate and the hypothesis of this research that "There will be a relationship between work stress and job satisfaction is" is supported. 9. Prediction variables affecting job satisfaction include satisfaction with nurse, job responsibility. Among these, job satisfaction based on satisfaction with nurse is explained as 22.4% and two variables can explain job satisfaction by 34.5%.
