The world of Korean art in the 1980's went through a great deal of ordeal in the social circumstances which changed rapidly at home and abroad. The bad effects from a depression resulted in the political, economical and cultural fields. Under these circumstances, the structure of art could not help being changed.
Thus, the structure of modern art is shown not by individual capacity, but by social circumstances of art.
The modern art of Korea strived to search for an aesthetic world through the western sense for the last thirty years.
Unlike this fact, such a phenomenon is a type of self-consciousness which derived from a conflict between painters sense and the modern western art.
This type of self-consciousness prevalent in every cornet of society influenced the modern art of Korea. As a result, the movement of Provincial art tends to show rivalship between conservative painters and a group of painters who deny completely the existing art system and the movement is carried out in a dialectic process.
This movement in the 1980s was more prominent in KwangJu-Chunnam painting circles than in any other area. But the exact examination of KwangJu-Chunnam abstract art must be required. This is because the value and prospect of modern abstract art are not clear in view of complex phenomena which are cultural or environmental, political, economical and social, and a group of painters who are opposed to the existing value am establishment cane in to being in Kwangju-Chunnam painting circles.
The Purpose of this paper is to understand modern Western art through the group 'Epo´que' which was the origin of modern art in Chumam and to analyze the reality of our modern art in relati to the view point of the group. In other words, this paper is devoted to describing the group 'Epo´que' as three phases, that is, an early phase, a developing phase and a turning phase, and also to showing a course in which the group proceeds by analyzing. synthesizing and arranging abstract art movement in Kwangju-Chunnam area.
