In the 7th curriculum of the Ministry of Education, the English classes for the third and fourth graders of elementary schools were reduced to one hour per week, and the pupils do not have enough opportunity to contact with English out side of their schools. Under such EFL circumstances, it is necessary to provide situation clues aiming at substantial communications, diversified experiences and activities, cooperative learning, with abundant materials/subjects stimulating their interests and concerns about the basic knowledge elementary pupils have.
In this context, this study, in order to improve meaningful interactions, activation of feedbacks, true communication opportunity, is intended for the development and application of integrated learning programs of English lessons utilizing the stories with other subjects and thereby for the verification of their effects.
Integrated learning through the stories, as one of the content-based approaches, is to utilize the stories as part of the lessons, to integrate the transcendent knowledge of pupils with new languages to learn, and to integrate the literature languages with the linguistic functional learning contents mainly learnt at school.
Therefore, in this study the English and other subjects' textbooks for the third grader of elementary school were analyzed and their relevant children's stories were selected based on the theoretical backgrounds of subjects-integrated English educations, content-based approaches, and the effects of the stories. Further, integrated lesson models of the English utilizing the stories with other subjects were developed. Finally, on the assumption that there would be meaningful differences in English abilities and definition areas between the group under integrated learning utilizing the stories and the group under normal English learning, the experimental lessons were conducted for two classes of the third graders.
The verification indicated that the experimental group under integrated lessons with other subjects utilizing the stories showed meaningful differences in listening abilities, learning interests and attitude areas. It showed no meaningful differences in speaking abilities, but its average score was higher than the group under normal English lessons. Accordingly, the conclusions analyzed from the results of this study are as follows.
First, integrated learning utilizing the stories had affirmative effects in improving English listening abilities and speaking abilities.
Second, Integrated learning was very effective in improving the interests and attitude towards English learning. It can be interpreted that the stories stimulated children's motives, provided consistent and important language experiences. More over integrated learning with other subjects brought about meaningful interactions through cooperative learning under the situation reflecting the real world and experience.
Based on the results of this study I am proposing the following ideas.
First, I propose that diversified integrated learning programs should be developed to use English except at normal classes regardless of the textbooks or the curriculums. In this study, to overcome the English class of one hour per week, the substantial and diversified integrations with other subjects were conducted and lots of communication opportunities to speak in English were provided. However, if more systematic, diversified, and independent programs are to be developed and applied, they would help maintain the interests and motives of the pupils, and improve their communicative abilities under the EFL circumstances.
Second, in the process of curriculum development, if the materials and contents for English lessons are selected in connection with those for other subjects' lessons utilizing the stories at story content-based approaches, the operation of integrated lessons of English with other subjects would be facilitated. In addition, through diversified and concrete activities in connection with substantial and natural situations owing to high motivations and interest inducement, children would improve their communicative abilities.
Third, for integrated learning of the English with other subjects, teachers should improve their English communicative abilities through the training and studies, and should be familiar with linguistic skills up to understand and organize the contents of other subjects sufficiently. Since English expression abilities of teaching-learning contents are demanded for effective integrated education, teacher training opportunities should be expanded and also sufficient budgets and social supports should be secured to develop new teaching-learning materials.
