서구 문명에 있어서 기독교의 출현은 역사상 큰 전환점으로 로마제국과 유럽운명의 기초를 형성하게 하였다. 로마의 고대문화에 이어 중세는 동방의 기독교가 거의 모든 일의 중심이 되어 전유럽이 로마 카톨릭(Catholic)이라는 공통된 신앙으로 통일되어 복식사상 다른 어느때 보다도 복식과 종교가 불가분의 관계에 있었다.
이러한 견지에서 중세의 기독교 복식을 고찰하는 것은 2천년 역사를 지배하고 전통을 고수하고 있는 Catholic 복식을 이해하고 각 전례복을 사적 고찰하는데 도움이 되며 또한 중세에 기독교와 복식이 밀접한 관계에 있던 만큼 복식의 역사를 밝히는 한 과정으로서도 의의가 있다고 본다.
따라서, 본 연구는 Catholic 복식에 대한 연구를 단순히 사적 변천과정을 밝히는 사적 고찰에만 결부시키지 않고 Catholic 복식의 형성과정에서 가장 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 중세를 중심으로 그당시 Catholic 복식의 유형양식이 그 시대적 상황과 그 시대의 일반복식과 어떠한 상호 관련성을 가지고 형성되어 방향을 발전시켜나가 오늘에까지 이르고 있는가를 밝히는데 그 목적을 두었다.
기독교는 크게 두개의 종파 즉, 구교(Catholic)와 신교(Protestant)로 나눌수 있는데 본연구의 범위는 구교 즉, 로마 Catholic 복식에 한하였다.
이에 따른 연구방법은 이에 관련된 문헌고찰과 중세 기독교 미술의 회화, 조각, 벽화, 모자이크 등에 나타난 종교복식을 연구자료로 하였다.
중세 기독교 복식을 시대별로 형성배경과 발전과정을 고찰해 본 결과 그 시대별로 간추려 보면 다음과 같다.
초기기독교 시대, 즉 기독교가 국교로 공인되기 전까지는 세속인과 구별되는 특별한 제복이 없었으며 단지 기독교의 도입과 함께 들어온 신형의 동방계 복식 Dalmatica가 성인, 성직자, 세속인 구별없이 중요한 복식으로 착용되었다. 그리고 이 당시 Pallium과 Lacerna, Paenula가 종교적 의미를 가지고 착용되게 되었다.
이어 Byzantine 시대에 와서 기독교가 공인되고 신권과 정권 즉 교회와 궁정이 긴밀하게 결합됨에 따라 기독교 복식은 궁정 복식과 어느 정도의 유사함을 보이며 발전하였다. 성인의 복장은 대개 Dalmatica나 Tynic위에 외투인 Pallium을 걸치는 형식이며 Byzantine 시대의 대표적인 복식인 Palludamentum도 착용되었다. 성직자의 복장은 기독교 공인과 더불어 그동안 널리 착용되어 오던 세속복 중 종교적인 상징적 의미를 갖는 Tunic, Dalmatica, AIbe, Chasuble, Cope가 교회내에서 특별한 제복으로 착용되어 이것이 발달되어 전례복으로 사용이 규정되었다.
Byzantine 시대에 형성된 기독교 복식은 그 기본 형식에 있어 그대로 Romanesque 시 대로 계승되어 여기에 새로운 세부적인 장식물 등이 첨가되고 직물이 화려해짐으로서 보다 엄숙하고 위엄있는 전례복을 창조하게 되었다. 그러나 이때부터 일반복식은 많은 유행과 변화를 추구하게 되어 전통적인 복식형을 추구하는 기독교 복식과는 서서히 상이함을 보여 주었으며 이러한 현상은 Gothic 시대에 이르러 더욱 두드러져 기독교 복식에 있어서 그당시의 발전 증거는 거의 희박하고 기본형에 화려함과 사치함만이 더할 뿐이었다.
이상과 같이 중세의 기독교 복식을 시대별로 고찰해 본 결과, 기독교 즉, Catholic의 전례복 형성 단계는 이미 초기 기독교 시대를 거쳐 Byzantine 시대에 그 당시 일상복에서 유래되어 형성 발전되어 이루어져 그후의 전례복 형성에 중요한 모체가 되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그리고, 그 이후의 전례복 역시 Byzantine 시대의 것을 그대로 계승하여 그 기본형에 부분적으로 장식적인 변화만을 주고 있으나 그것은 단순히 그대로 모방 계승된 것이 아닌 그 시대적 여러 제반요인과 그 시대의 복식 유형에 따라 변동되고 또, 장식물 등이 첨가됨으로써 아름다운 전례복을 창조하였다.

The birth of Christianity, as a historic turning-point established a ground for the Roman Empire and the European Civilization. Following the ancient Roman culture, the Middle Age had the eastern Christianity as the center of every corner of Life. As the whole Europe united under Roman Catholicism, costume shared an indispensable relation with the religion.
At this juncture, to study Christian costume of the Middle Age gives an important opportunity to understand Catholic costume, since Catholicism has ruled history and tradition for more than 2,000 years. It also helps the process to prove into the history of clothes.
This study is not a simple historical observation of the change of Catholic costume. This study is focusing on the Middle Age when the style of Catholic costume moved into an important stage, aiming at how the style was formed under the circumstance of the Middle Age and the relation with ordinary clothes.
Christianity is divided into Catholicism and Protestantism. This study only deals with the Roman Catholic costume. The reference has a range from books to costume which can be found in several forms of the Christian art in the Middle Age such as painting, sculptures, wall paintings, mosaics and so on, I would like to give a chronological briefing on the background and development of the Christian costumes of the Middle Age.
In the earlier era of Christianity, specifically before Christianity was recognized as the national religion, there was no special costume for Christians which distinguished them from nonchristians. Europeans started wearing oriental costume, dalmatica which was introduced to them with Christianity, In these days they also wore pallium, lacerna, paenula with a religious meaning.
In the Byzantine period, Christianity was recognized by the Roman Empire, the church and the court shared a close relation each other. In this relation, Christian costume showed a similar style to the court costume, most of the European adults wore pallium over dalamatica or tunic. They also wore palludamentum which was regarded as a typical Byzantine costume. With recognition of Christianity by the Roman Empire, inside churches European priests wore tunic, dalmatica, albe, chasuble, cope, which had a religious meaning out of ordinary clothes. Those costume developed into Priest's Liturgical vestment later. Christian costume of the Byzantine Age, were handed down to the Romanesque Period. New details and ornaments were added to the costumes and more splendid fabrics were used for them. All these change created more solemn and dignifying face of the Christian costume. From the Byzantine Period, Ordinary people started to seek fashion and change in their clothes. The trend separated ordinary clothes from the Christian costume which rather held traditional style.
As the separation was intensified in the Gothic Period, there was almost no evidence for a unique change of the Christian costume of the era. The only change could be found in splendor and luxury.
As mentioned above, Catholic Liturgical Vestment had their origin in the ordinary clothes through out the earlier period of Christianity and the Byzantine Period. The Liturgical Vestment gave a motif to the Christian costume of next era.
Although the Byzantine christian costume were handed down to the next era, they were not simply imitated but modified and equipped with beautiful ornaments which matched the unique style of clothes in the period and social factors.
