The purpose of this study is to find out the appraisals of teachers on the managing ability of female, vice-principals under the present situation in which the number of female vice-principals is increasing with the growing number of female teachers.
Questionnaires were distributed to teachers, principals, and supervisors of elementary schools in Kyonggi province who had once worked with female vice-principals.
The presents study seeks to answer to following problems.
First, how to teachers appraise the managing ability of female vice-principals?
Second, are there any correlations in the appraisals of teachers on the managing ability of female vice-principals according to relating factors?
Third, are there any correlations between the appraisals of teachers on the different kinds of managing ability of female vice-principals?
Through the inspection of previous studies and the review of literature, the duty of a vice-principals was divided into five categories:
1) Curriculums and instruction
2) Personnel management on staff
3) Personnel management on students
4) General affairs, financial affairs, and facility management
5) The relationship between the community and the Educa tional Authorities.
Each category has 8 questions and in total 40 questions were made as managing duty factors.
This study is concluded as follows:
First, the teachers gave high marks to the managing ability of female vice-principals in all kinds of job : curriculum and instructions ; personnel management of staff; personnel management of student; general affairs, financial affairs and facility management; the relationship between the community and the Educational Authorities. This shows that female vice-principals have enough managing ability when compared with male vice-principals.
Second, there was some difference in the appraisals of the teachers on the managing ability of female vice-principals according to each relating factor. The teachers in 7 to 18 class schools, male teachers, and the teachers who have 21 to 30 years teaching experience appraise the managing ability of female vice-principals highly.
Third, there is a significant correlation between each category in the appraisals on the managing ability of female vice-principals.
The relationship between the area of curriculum and instructions, and that of personnel management of staff; and the area ofpersonnel management and that of personnel management of students show high correlation.
It shows that the higher the managing ability in the area of personnel management, and general affairs, financial affairs and facility management, the higher the ability to keep a good relationship between the community and the Educational Authorities.
In a word, it can be concluded that the appraisal of teachers on the managing ability of female vice-principals is relatively high.
