A Study on Postmodern Aesthetics and Postmodern Art Phenomena

(Abstract)
This study was conducted to systematically elucidate uncertain problems that have occurred in commection with postmodernism with note taken of the fact that the theory of postmodernism is based on the private ownership system of the western capitalism. Of course, the purpose of this study is also connected with the keen needs of our society to improve the quality of life by laying the groundwork for truly understanding the phenomena of postmodern art. Accordingly, this study attenpted to make clear that the research into postmodern aesthetics and phenomena of postmodern art complies with the needs of our present times. In the end, it could be said that, in the light of the special conditions of the Korean society that entirely relies on all political, economic or cultural phenomena of the West, figuratively speaking, very postmodern conditions, the research into the basic characteristics of postmodern aesthetics is essentially needed to pursue desirable life style by systematically identifying the complex, pluralistic artistic phenomena of our society.
In conclusion, this study tried to understand the basic characteristics of postmodernism, called 'culturally superior species,' which is accustomed but still strange, whith the possible range. The postmodern art phenomena, which has been rising as one of the most acute issues in this rapidly changing age, has been generalized and globalized as a specific cultural phenomenon that come into being under the American circumstances in 1960s but could be found to be still the trend of culture and art in active progress, flitting from genre to genre, not the completed trend of culture and art.
Since the postmodernism is closely related to modernism as a meaning element, we cannot deny that whether we understand the postmodernism as a critical reaction to the modernism or as the continuing development of the modernism is derectly related to what results the critical reflection and discussion on our phenomena of culture and art give.
Therefore, it is necessary to review out attitude that we consider to be postmodern unconditionally our phenomena of culture and art which the cultural popularity dominate and accipt them as worth because they are postmodernistic. If this trend toward popularity will still dominate our future culture and art and be accepted as worth, it will be necessary to make a safety pin to minimize bad or side effects of consumption-oriented capitalism or multinational capitalism that brought forth such popularity. It becomes clear that cultural logic of multinational consumer capitalism of postmodern art whose self-expression of subject emphasized by modernistic estreme subjectivism of romantic aesthetics became greatly weak and the subject may be broken up in the near future is not an axiological virtue that we should accept unconditionally because it improves the quality of our life. As it becomes known as the postmodernism, of course, the phenomena of culture and art by which our life is surrounded may be accepted as those that contain desirable axiological virtue that can expand our semantic perspective, Therefore, it can be concluded that they are the only hope that can improve the quality of our life in the future. If the postmodern aesthetics and postmodern art phenomena are introduced to and spread in our society uncritically, our art and culture will be more dependent on the western art and culture. We have to realize that the way of escaping from such dependence is to arrange systematic devices for critically verifying the general of the western postmodernism and to control the phenomena of art and culture related to it through such devices.
