The purpose of this study was to examine how much physically challenged people actually enjoyed lifetime sports in order to seek ways to further their sustained social adjustment. To encourage their lifetime sports activities, it's needed first to obtain accurate information on their participation in lifetime sports and then determine what type of measure should be taken. And that will make further contribution to formulating better welfare policies for physically different people. For that purpose, the following research questions were posed:
1. What is the relationship of the general characteristics of the physically challenged to their lifetime sports activities?
2. What is the impact of their general characteristics on their need for lifetime sport and their view on its effect?
3. What is the influence of their lifetime sports activity level on their need for lifetime sport and their opinion on its effect?
The subjects in this study were 397 physically different people from the city of Daegu. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with SPSS. The findings of this study were as below:
First, as a result of looking into their participation in lifetime sports, as many as 32.5 percent of the people investigated got exercise. Out of them, 70.5 percent had worked out for a year or more, and 40.3 percent got exercise for one hour or more at a time. The largest group of them worked out with their friends. Those who didn't enjoy lifetime sport were unable to do it because of their physical handicap, and were highly willing to do it if the circumstances permit.
Second, they felt the need for lifetime sport, and viewed its effect positively.
Third, regarding connections between their extent of lifetime sports activity and their outlook on lifetime sports, those who worked out had a better opinion than the others who didn't.
The above-mentioned findings suggest that the way people look at sports for the physically challenged should be changed to encourage them to take part more in lifetime sports. A lot of sports facilities for the disabled should be established as a space where they could enjoy sports in free time, and appropriate sports programs should be developed. And some incentives should be prepared to enlarge the sports population among them. For instance, subsidiary could be provided to sporting devices or physical education facilities that are used by them. The government, local autonomous units and business sector should take concerted action to boost sports activities by physically challenged people, and they also should try to get exercise.
