The main purpose of this study is to reveal the relation between two variables, that is to say, the control of parents to the drinking of adolescents and ages. The drinking of adolescents is divided into quantitative drinking and problematic drinking and the quantitative drinking is subdivided according to the frequency of drinking, the quantity of drinking, and the degree of intoxication and measured.
The control of parents is divided into direct and indirect control; the direct control is measured according to the consistency of discipline, fairness of discipline, the intensity of punishment; the indirect control is measured according to the intimacy of parents-children, communication among parents-children, and superintendence of parents to children.
The subjects of this study are 2nd graders in middle school who are in their early stage of adolescent days and 2nd graders in high school who are in their middle stage of adolescent days.
The results of this study are as follows. The statistics reveal that without considering ages in the relation between the drinking of adolescents and the control of parents, the fairness of discipline which is one of the direct control has meaningful influence on the quantity of drinking and the superintendence of parents which is one of the indirect control has meaningful influence on the drinking of adolescents. That is, the fairer the discipline of parents is and the more concern parents have for their children and the more recognition parents have on their children, the lower degrees of drinking of adolescents and the less the problem by drinking they have. It is revealed that when the influence of age is considered, the drinking of middle school students is influenced greatly from the consistency of discipline and the punishment and the drinking of highschool students is influenced greatly from the superintendence of parents and the communication among parents-children. Namely, it is revealed that the direct control has more influence to the middle school students and the indirect control has more influence to the high school students. Therefore, the effective methods for the parents to control the drinking of their children vary according to their ages. The direct method is more effective to younger children and the indirect method is more effective to older children.
This study showed the importance of function of parents controlling the drinking of adolescents by the research of the relation between the control of parents and the drinking of adolescents. The result of this study reveals that the drinking of adolescents can be controlled if the discipline of parents is practiced rightly and consistently and the parents oversee their children having interest and communicate with qualitative contents and the relation among parents-children is intimate. So, the drinking of adolescents and the control of parents have a close relation and the study about the responsibility of parents should be done as the cause of the problematic behavior of adolescents in the future. And the result of this study showed that in controlling the drinking of adolescents the control by parents could be effective according to their ages. Therefore this result could provide help in making the program to reduce and prevent the drinking of adolescents and in constituting the model for the parents training. This study has the limit in that its result was acquired by the latitudinal survey and the application of result can be very limited in geographic side. From now on, the accumulation of longitudinal data and the selection of proper area which has the quality of representative will be needed to get more advanced result of study about the drinking of adolescents in the future.
