This study was aimed at finding out the effects of mathematics education through literary approach on the development of preschool children's mathematical problem-solving abiliity and achievement degree.
The participants were 40 preschool children, aged 5, in 'J' kindergarten located in Pohang, Kyongbuk. To investigate the validity of the experiment, participants were devided into two groups, the experimental group and the control group.
Mathematical problem-solving ability measurement tool is mathematical activity tasks which was studied by Hong Hye-Kyeong. Hong Hye-Kyeong reformed Bird's case study that was analyzing young children's mathematical concepts. Mathematical achivement degree test tool is of Lee Gi-Hyeon's study. This tool is SESAT2(Standard Early Achivement test) produced by The Psychological Corporation. It has 38 questions about number concepts, problem-solving, geometry, and the measurement.
To estimate the effect of the mathematical problem-solving ability, MANOVA test was administered by which total scores of four subvariables as the dependent variable and group variables as the independent variable. It was verified at the significant level of .05
To estimate the effect of mathematical achivement degree, MANOVA test was administered by which total scores of four subvariables as the dependent variable and group variables as the independent variable. It was verified at the significant level of .05.
The results of this study are as following.
First, experimental group showed higher level of mathematical problem-solving ability than control group. This suggests that mathematics education through literary approach can be a useful method for improving young children's mathematical problem-solving ability. The result showed no significant difference in subvariables such as number combination, space arrangement, shape compound. However, it turned out that classification has significant difference.
Second, experimental group showed higher level of mathematical achievement degree than control group. This also suggests that mathematics education through literary approach had an effect on preschool children's mathematical achievement degree. Although subvariables such as problem-solving and geometry showed no significant difference, subvariables such as number concepts and measurement showed significant difference.
