The purpose of this experiments is to investigate the effect of Liriopis Tuber, containing much carbohydrates and being used as an important drug for tonic and quenching thirst in traditional medicine, on exercise performance in swimming trained rats.
The exercise regimen was designed in loaded swimming model; lead weight equivalent to 5% of body mass was attached to the chest of the rat and swimming took place in a 23 cm diameter plastic tank filled with water (48 cm deep) at 28~30℃.
This experiments was studied in acute supply model and in chronic supply model. Experimental groups were trained swimming on schedule for 4 weeks and divided into 4 groups each in a model (Acute supply model ; Group A: water, Group B: commercial beverage, Group C: hot water extract from Liriopis Tuber, Group D: water fraction from Liriopis Tuber and Chronic supply model ; Group A: water, Group B:glucose, Group C: hot water extract from Liriopis Tuber, Group D: water fraction from Liriopis Tuber).
Exercise performance was evaluated by analysis of exhaustion time, blood enzyme (AST, ALT, LDH), blood fatigue elements (lactate, ammonia, phosphorus) and energy substrates (glucose, glycogen, FFA).
Obtained results were as follows:
1. In acute supply model study, supply of Liriopis Tuber improved exercise performance and reduced blood fatigue elements level by inducing lipid oxidation and assisting muscle and liver to reduce glycogen consumption during exercise. The effect of hot water extract from Liriopis Tuber was better than that of water fraction from Liriopis Tuber. Water fraction from Liriopis Tuber was prepared by the fractionation of EtOAc and n-BuOH from the MeOH extract, and by passing through Amberlite XAD-II.
2. In chronic supply model study, supply of Liriopis Tuber reduced blood triglyceride, increased blood HDL-cholesterol and improved exercise performance by more activation of glycolysis and Krebs cycle.
