Purpose: The purpose of this study is a comparative analysis to understand the meaning of life between home elderly(H.E) and institutionalized elderly(I.E), and the effective factors to meaning of life.
Method: Subjects are total 218 persons who are 110 home elderly(H.E) living in D city and 108 institutionalized elderly(I.E) living in K province. The tools used in this study are the purpose in life of Crumbaugh(1964) and hope developed by Nowotny(1989) which translated and modified by Kim Dae Bok(1990). The data has been collected for 60days from Dec. 1st. 2001 to Jan. 30th. 2002. For the analysis of collected data, frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, Multiple regression have been statistically managed by means of SAS program.
Results: 1. In difference approval for the meaning of life in home elderly & institutionalized elderly, H.E is 69.66(SD=11.77), I.E is 53.13(SD=14.27). H.E presents the higher score than the I.E and shows the specific significance statistically. H.E showed the higher score than the I.E in hope as H.E 87.65(SD=10.24) I.E 71.68(SD=16.05), and significant difference was found statistically (t=-8.723, p=.000). 2. General characteristics showing significant difference in the meaning of life were presence of disease(F=-4.43, P=.000) and average monthly pocket money(F=22.97, P=.000) in H.E and education(F=9.45, P=.000), object of support(F=4.92 P=.002), presence of disease(F=3.03, P=.003) and average monthly pocket money(F=10.50, P=.000) in I.E. 3. The relation between the meaning of life & hope in H.E presents positive correlation in the degree of religion(r=.36 p=.000), average monthly pocket money(r=.41 p=.000), family support(r=.41 p=.000) and a coefficient of correlation r=.592. In case of I.E, it presents positive correlation in hope(r=.42 p=.000), health condition(r=.42 p=.000), social activity(r=.35 p=.000) and a coefficient of correlation r=.426. As a result, hope and meaning of life has positive correlation pattern. 4. The suitable regression pattern resulting from the multiple regression analysis to investigate the factors influencing the meaning of life in H.E is as follows, y=96.51-.40x₁-.33x₂-.47x₃+1.87E-.02x₄+.95x_5+1.72x_6+7.1x_7 (x₁: hope, x₂:age, x₃:the degree of religion, x₄: average monthly pocket money, x_5: family support, x_6: health condition, x_7: social activity), and these described the meaning of life in H.E with 35.6%. The suitable regression pattern resulting from the multiple regression analysis to investigate the factors influencing th meaning of life in I.E is as follows, y=85.85-.51x₁+1.19x₂ +.88x₃+57x₄(x₁: hope, x₂: health condition, x₃: social activity, x₄: education) and these described the meaning of life with 47.7%
Conclusion: It can be said that the meaning of life and hope for home and institutionalized elderly are important variables related to self integration. Therefore, more specific and effective nursing interventions are needed to enhance quality care and developmental tasks of the elderly.
