This study was to examine psychological factors influencing the juvenile suicide drive to reduce suicide attempt, suicide behavior and suicide drive and to find an intervention plan for juveniles under suicide danger.
For this objective, relation between the juvenile suicide drive and psychological factors was examined. As psychological factors, depression, self-respect, stress and social support were selected, which have been continuously pointed out in previous researches on the suicide drive. In addition, correlation between psychological factors and suicide drive was examined by sex, departments of school, grade, family composition, reasons of family destruction, and monthly family income.
Based on the above objective, findings of this study are summarized as follows;
First, depression, self-respect, stress, social support and suicide drive of the subjects were examined with five point scale.
Depression means the higher is the measured point, the more is depression and the point was 2.69253. Self-respect means the higher is the measured point, the more is self-respect and the point was 3.12767. Also, stress means the higher is the measured point, the more is stress and the point was 2.52222. Among social supports, the point of support from family was 3.86172, the point of support from friend was 2.95115, and the point of support from teacher was 3.63985. Finally, the suicide drive means the more is the measured point, the more is the suicide drive and the point was 2.13067 - it means that all the subjects felt the suicide drive one time or more.
Second, all of suicide drive, depression, self-respect, stress and social support had significant correlation. Therefore, as a result of simple regression analysis on depression, self-respect, stress and social support influencing the suicide drive, they all were significant except support from teacher among social supports.
From such result, the more the subjects are depressed, experience much stress and recognize negative self-respect and lack of family members and support from friend, the more they feel the suicide drive.
Third, as a result of multiple regression analysis to examine what variable significantly influences the suicide drive among variables of depression, self-respect, suicide consideration, stess and support from family, friend and teacher, by order of depression, support from family, stess, support from friend and self-respect influenced the suicide drive. Through this analysis, it was proved that depression is a psychological symptom the most commonly related with the juvenile suicide drive. And, when the subjects cannot receive enough support from family due to crisis of family function, they experience much stress, and they do not smoothly form connection with their friends, self-respect becomes low and the suicide drive becomes more.
Fourth, as a result of examining difference between the suicide drive and psychological factors by sex, departments, grade, family composition, reasons of family destruction, and monthlty family income, there was no significance by sex, however, female felt higher suicide drive than male. And the subjects felt the suicide drive by order of academic school, coeducation, agricultural school and commercial school in order. It is judged that such result was caused by anxiety about admission examination and course in view of domestic educational conditions. And, it is considered that difference in the suicide drive between the academic department and unacademic department was made most by stress from admission examination. For grade, the lower it was, the more the subjects felt the suicide drive. Grade, as a factor the most connected with admission examination, influences the juvenile suicide drive. The suicide drive showed insignificant result by family composition but significant result by stress and support from family.
The subjects experienced stress by order of living with stepfather of stepmother, separated parent, widowed mother or widowed father and parents and recognized lowly support from family.
The suicide drive showed insignificant result by reasons of family destruction but it was significant by stress and support from family.
The subjects recognized high stress and low support from family by order of divorce family, family under separated parents, death of parent(s), and separation from parents due to entrance.
There was correlation between family income and suicide drive; the higher family income was, the more thet felt the suicide drive. Such result was caused by that they experience much depression and stress due to relatively low self-respect and social support in capitalistic society.
As shown in the above-mentioned results, the suicide drive was generated not by a single factor but by a complex process of multiple factors. To reduce it, social worker shall be guaranteed to provide psychological services for such complex juvenile psychology, systematic suicide prevention program shall be executed, and at the same time parents education shall be performed to make juveniles recognize importance of family relationship as family environment is a significant factor of suicide drive.
Finally, phone or online counseling, with juveniles shall be expanded. As they may do self-destructive behavior or thinking when there is no one to hear their trouble, quality phone or online counseling shall be performed to establish their self-consciousness and convert their negative thinking into positive thinking. In addition, specialists in juvenile problems including social worker shall recognize clues for extreme behaviors such as drug use, emotional, behavioral change.
