An advent of a new media age, based on computers and new technology, it is possible to communicate at anytime, anywhere. On-line communication is representative.
Telecommunication languages used in chatting, notice board, and e-mail by the internet users are getting rapidly produced new words and changing in recent years. Telecommunication languages are used by younger generation, reflecting their own sensuous and straight culture. Their language has both oral and written language features. There is some limit to express something using written language instead of oral language. So new symbols and unusual grammar are introduced to communicate via on-line.
This study aims to investigate various kinds of characteristics of the language of telecommunications based on notice board languages; BBSs, and to help to understand the telecommunication languages better by analyzing them in terms of linguistics. First, the concept, traits and occurrence of telecommunication languages in the computer communication are discussed and the specific change patterns of telecommunication languages are heavily discussed phonological, syntactic and semantic nature by collecting languages in BBSs.
As a result of analysis, we are able to find the many kinds of changes in the languages of telecommunication, especially BBSs. Regarding phonological aspect of the languages in BBSs, people usually delete consonants and vowels to type fast and often coin new jargons and slang in terms of lexical aspects. Shortened language form is preferred. It is impressive that shortened or informal words and emoticons are used. In dealing with the language in BBSs, it will be pointed out that there is productive usage of abbreviations and acronyms. Orthography is disregarded. Language destruction occurs intentionally. Various forms of jargon are employed.
Onomatopoeic or mimetic words are used quite often. On the other hand, the visualization of paralinguistic features, gestures, using punctuations marks or emoticons helps to understand better. There are new types of word formation and 'special grammar' which express a new fresh idea of a young generation.
Accordingly, we should develop language efficiency and repress excessive destruction of written language grammar. I hope this study will help to establish desirable telecommunication languages culture, futhermore the language culture that is the core of our thoughts, social and culture.
