This study was researched for furnishing the basic data which are necessary for parenting the mental retardation children in the better conditions through analyzing the parenting burden and desire of mothers of mental retardation children.
And this study surveyed the emotional, physical, social, financial burden and the desire for the service from community, national according to their characteristics (age, education level, income and sex of their children) of the mothers of one hundred twenty three mental retardation children.
As a result of the study, conclusion were reached by reviewing the following:
First, mothers who have lower education level have more pressure of financial burden than mothers who have higher education level and mothers whose monthly income is between 1.01-2.00 million won have more pressure of financial burden than mothers whose monthly income is over 2.01 million won.
Secondly, the desire for the service from community and nation has no statistically remarkable difference according to their characteristics that is age, education level, income and sex of their children.
Thirdly, it was resulted that the emotional, physical, social and financial burdens were correlated each other. Physical and social burdens were comparatively high and the desire for the service from community and nation was comparatively high. The desire for the service from nation was low correlated with physical, social and financial burdens and the desire for service from community was low correlated with social burden.
Based on this results, the devices for mitigating the parenting burden and satisfying the mother's desire are viewed as following.
First, the services adequate for the characteristics of mothers of mental retardation children are required.
Secondly, the environment in which the mothers can be supported continually and individually is required.
Finally, official support is required to be improved qualitatively and quantitatively.
