독립적-상호의존적 자기관과 사회불안 : 공적 자의식의 매개효과 = Independent-interdependent self-construal and social anxiety : mediational effects of public self-consciousness

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 독립적, 상호의존적 자기관이 공적 자의식을 통해 사회불안에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 하였다. 남녀 대학생 530명을 대상으로 사회불안, 자기관, 및 자의식 수준을 측정하는 설문을 실시하였다.
연구 결과, 독립적 자기관은 사회불안과 높은 부적 상관을 보인 반면, 상호의존적 자기관은 사회불안과 유의한 상관을 보이지 않았다. 독립적 성향이 우세한 집단과 독립적 성향과 의존적 성향이 모두 강한 집단은 상호의존적 성향이 우세한 집단 및 두 성향이 모두 약한 집단보다 사회불안 수준이 유의하게 낮았으며, 사회불안에 있어 독립적 성향의 주효과만이 유의했다. 구조방정식을 통해 매개모형을 검증한 결과, 독립적 자기관은 사회불안에 직접적으로 부적인 영향을 미쳤으며, 상호의존적 자기관은 공적 자의식을 매개로 사회불안에 간접적으로 정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 사회불안에 대한 전체적인 영향력은 독립적 자기관이 상호의존적 자기관에 비해 더 컸다.
본 연구의 결과는 집단주의 문화권에서 독립적 자기관은 사회불안에 보호적인 기능을 하고, 상호의존적 자기관은 그 자체가 부적응적이라기보다 공적 자의식을 통해 사회불안에 영향을 미침을 보여주며, 자기관의 기능이 문화적 맥락에 따라 달라질 수 있음을 시사한다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of independent and interdependent self-construals on social anxiety and the mediational effects of public self-consciousness. A total of 530 university students were administered self report measures of social anxiety, self-construal and self-consciousness.
The results indicated that independent self-construal was correlated negatively with social anxiety, but interdependent self-construal was not related to social anxiety. The main effect of independent self-construal on social anxiety was significant, and irrespective of interdependent self-construal level, those with high level of independent self-construal had significantly lower social anxiety level than those with low level of independent self-construal. The results of structural equation modeling revealed that independent self-construal had direct negative influence on social anxiety but the effect of interdependent self-construal on social anxiety was completely mediated through public self-consciousness. The total effect of independent self-construal on social anxiety was stronger than that of interdependent self-construal.
The present study shows that independent self-construal has protective effect on social anxiety, and interdependent self-construal is not maladaptive in itself in collectivistic cultures, which suggests that the effects of self-construals depend on cultural context.
