In this country, the production of celadon is assumed to begin from about 9th∼10th century. Among celadons produced at the time were a celadon ware, a white ware, and a black-glazed pottery(黑釉) made by red clay containing oxidized steel. A celadon was one of the most manufactured potteries in this era so that this earthenware is called as "earlier celadon". Sites for a earlier celadon kiln can be divided into two sorts: a kiln built by bricks(塼築窯) and a kiln made by clay(土築窯) which show differences in characteristics such as materials for building kiln, structures of the kiln and features of an excavated article; the former had been mainly distributed in the middle area of Korean Peninsular and the latter had been largely dispersed in southem-west area in this country.
This thesis is aimed to investigate the attributes of unearthed articles, focusing on findings from clay kilns which had been spreaded in Sindeok-ri(新德里), Haenam(海南), Youngwoon-ri(龍雲里), Gangjin(康津), Poongil-ri(豊吉里), Jangheung(長興), Woondae-ri(雲垈里), Goheung(高興) and then illustrate a production period of earlier celadon from clay-made kilns, based on existing researches. With detailed classification of findings from distinctive areas, this paper explores a relative order of prior and posterior, reexamining the established researches on its classifying methods and its chronological order of the bowls with halo-shaped bases.
As the Korean Peninsular and China in 9th∼10th centuries had been transforming themselves into each Goryeo and Song dynasty in the aftermath of the weakness of royal authority and political chaos, interchanges between two countries had been largely performed in economic and cultural way rather than in the political and social aspects. The producing technology of earlier celadon had been flowed into this country primarily through the southern west coast of Korea and a sea route which connected between the Peninsular and southern China; this inflow seemed to be predominantly made by the local powerful clan families who, at the time, was able to accumulate their wealth owing to marine trades with China. Additionally, in terms of the history of the ceramic industry, pottery kilns in the southern west areas, which had existed ahead of the production of earlier celadon, had begun to change their structure from underground structure found in Goorim-ri, Yeongam to half-underground structure found in Samheung-ri, Gangjin during the production period of earlier celadon. Celadon kiln has half-underground structure, and is small-sized and clay-made one, which is about 10 meters long and about 1.2∼1.4 meters wide such as in Youngwoon-ri 10-1, Ganjin and Samheung-ri D district 1.2; the same is assumed to be the structures of other clay kilns including kilns of Sindeok-ri, Haenam and Youngwoon-ri 63, Gangjin.
By way of the classification of an excavated article type, findings were able to be divided into each Sindeok-ri 1,2,3 term and Gangjin Ⅰ, Ⅱ type, based on the type transformation of bowls with halo-shaped bases, wide-bowls, dishes and small bowls. In other words, the types of wide-bowls, dishes, small bowls and cups had been changed from a concave inner-bottom surface style(內底曲面式) to a circle-carved inner-bottom surface style(內底線刻式), into a circle-pressed inner-bottom surface style(內低圓刻式). The bowls with halo-shaped bases, which became one of important grounds in clarifying the production period of earlier celadon, can be classified into the followings, according to the diameter of base, the width of adjoining side: prior halo-shaped bases, Chinese style halo-shaped bases (Ⅰ A type, Ⅰ B type) and Korean style halo-shaped bases (Ⅱ A type, Ⅱ B type, Ⅱ C type); thus, the production of celadons is presumed to begin from the earlier ninth century.
Yet, as a consequence of examining bowls with halo-shaped bases practically, since Chinese style halo-shaped bases and Korean style halo-shaped bases have been excavated together in most celadon sites, the classification of types and chronological order above mentioned appear to be groundless; the relationship alone that a concave inner-bottom surface style(內底曲面式) is ahead of a circle-pressed inner-bottom surface style(內低圓刻式) can be concluded according to the forms of a inner-bottom surface. In addition to this, the possibility of relationship between prior and posterior among pottery sites in Sindeok-ri, Haenam has also been proven. Accordingly, even though, concerning the production period of earlier celadon, it is possible to follow the established classifying methods about the types of bowls with halo-shaped bases, the earliest production period of the bowls from clay kiln can be assumed to be no earlier than 10th century; the production period of earlier celadon from clay kiln can be inferred to be no earlier than 10th century as the forms of flower-shaped dishes show an influence of Hwang-bo celadon sites in Five Dynasties, China.
Earlier celadons from clay kilns can be largely divided into the first term and the second term, based on changes of forms by celadon types, modification of kilns instruments and whether the celadon was first baked or not. The features of the first term can be considered as follows: the celadon of wide-bowls, dishes, small bowls and cups are proven to be made by a concave inner-bottom surface style(A type) and a line-carved inner-bottom surface style(B type); bowls with halo-shaped bases by a concave inner-bottom surface style; in the cases of flower-shaped dishes, their outer facets seem to be pressed vertically and long; kilns instruments such as circle bowl boxes(圓筒形 匣鉢), pads of bowl boxes, rice-bowl-shaped bowl boxes(鉢形 匣鉢), reversed-bowl boxes shaped like dome(覆鉢形 匣鉢) and covers of bowl boxes, which were primarily used in brick kilns, are unearthed; the first baked ones have not been found; the sites of Youngwoon-ri 63, Gangjin, Poongil-ri, Jangheung, Sindeok-ri 1st and 2nd term, Haenam would fall into this category.
The features of the second term can be said as these: wide-bowls, dishes and small bowls show the fact that they were mainly made by a circle-pressed inner-bottom surface style(C type), with a concave inner-bottom surface style(A type) disappearing; regarding kiln tools, instruments including circle bowl boxes, pads of bowl boxes and various pottery mats and silica pads had been used; first baked ones have been found; sites of Ganjin Ⅱ types including Younwoon-ri 9 would fall into this category. Woondae-ri, Goheung, Sindeok-ri 1st term, Haenam, and Youngwoon-ri 9, Gangjin are presumed to be a transition period as they show mixed attributes of 1st term and 2nd term. On the other hand, although findings of Sindeok-ri and Woondae-ri, Goheung in the 1st term show evidences of the technology of first-baked production, they produced coarse celadon without careful selection of embryonic oil; they clearly exhibit differences, in terms of its qualities, from finding out of Youngwoon-ri, Gangjin where pure celadon were produced.
The features of clay-kilns findings can be epitomized as the following: Chinese elements; the traditional producing method of earthenware and pottery shapes found in wide-tray, a flask with wide-mouth and oil-bottles; the effects of brick kilns which can be inferred from kiln tools; and all exist together. A difference from brick kilns is that their excavated articles and their structure show a direct impact from China. Thus, since clay kilns display characteristics of the times when new technologies began to be introduced from China, but on the other hand the traditional methods became gradually established, it is assumed that celadon production started from no earlier than the mid-10th century, which followed the activities of brick kilns occurred during the earlier 10th century.
