This study aims to redefine the concept of 'Shinsa' (a depicting technique that emphasizes the spirit of an object), and review its birth and distinguishing characteristics of the painting in the era of Song dynasty. It further talks about how 'Shinsa' has been reinterpreted in the paintings of today. In this respect, it studies both Song painting and my painting in order to obtain a profound perspective. It also shows how the Shinsa concept has been applied in other artists' work by detecting elements of Shinsa.
Shinsa expressions in Oriental painting aim to visualize the genuine spirit of an object through an artist's perception, instead of simply depicting the outside appearance of an object with a scientific approach like in Hyungsa painting. In other words, 'Shinsa' which signifies 'Understanding the intrinsic characteristics of an object', expresses the spirituality laid within an object. Here, Shin(神)' is applicable to an intrinsic human spirituality and it indicates an absolute understanding of both an object's genuine nature and laws. On the other hand, Shinsa, an image of spirituality, doesn't necessarily persue abstract expressions only. The relationship between Shinsa and Hyungsa in Oriental painting is to sincerely describe both images and the true nature of objectified reality in an artistic way since 'Shinsa' is also understood as a detailed image, not just as an abstractive expression of an object's intrinsic nature.
Su-shi, whose Shinsa ideas were pioneering, asserted that a true value of painting has to appear through the observation of the inner world, the intrinsic characteristics of an object, not through the judgement of object's resemblance a s he dealt with the relationship between Shinsa and Hyungsa. In this respect, he evaluated work in which both Hyungsa and Shinsa were organically harmonized, as the best creation, but at the same time, he developed painting that emphasizes spirituality rather than appearance. Su-shi's painting ideas built the theoretical foundation of Shinsa expressions in the literary style painting which became mainstream after the Song Period.
The following body consists of four chapters, with the third chapter being the main focus. The first chapter defines both the notions of Hyungsa and Shinsa and their synthetic connection, which theoretically support Shinsa expressions in Song painting while introducing the origin of Shinsa concepts and its development, and it also reviews major painting theories before the Song Period regarding the Shinsa concept according to the times,
The second chapter mainly focuses on Shinsa expressions in Song painting. It examines the Shinsa expressions that started thriving and blossomed at that time, along with its connection to the 'literary style of painting, while also reviewing the background of the initial Shinsa expressions.
In chapter three, the connection between the pictorial and theoretical characteristics of several selected works, whose Shinsa expressions are well dissolved in both content and formation aspects, are compared and reviewed through both the analysis and verification of new research methods.
The fourth chapter investigates how the Shinsa expressions are adopted and interpreted in my work which is based on the modern understanding of Shinsa, with the work's philosophy.
The contents of this study are: a review of the initial stage of both Hyungsa and Shinsa concepts in Oriental painting to the completed Shinsa expressions in the Song Period and as well a s the historical development of Yuan, Ming and Ching Periods through literature research methods. Based on the research results, both analysis and verification of work take place from the 'analytical artistic viewpoint', using examples of good paintings of Shinsa's concepts by the most prominent Song painters.
In addition, it examines whether modern interpretations and adoptions of Shinsa expressions are possible through my painting. The connection between my work and Song Shinsa expressions are further verified and confirmed by showing the analysis and inquiry process of how the spirituality of Song Shinsa expressions are applied and explored within my painting. This study aims to redefine the concept of 'Shinsa' (a depicting technique that emphasizes the spirit of an object), and review its birth and distinguishing characteristics of the painting in the era of Song dynasty.
