Due to advanced medical technology and improved living standards, the problem of increasing population of elderly people has become a serious problem of the modern society. The aging of population in Korea is a lot faster than the Western countries and this means that there need to be active plans for the individuals and the society.
This study found out what kind of consciousness the adults in 30~40s, who are the next generation of elderly people, have on their provision for the elderly life. Also the study looked into how they are planning for their elderly life financially and psychologically as well as their desires for the welfare policy. Therefore, this study has a goal of finding out the desirable provision for the elderly life through the study.
For the study, a survey investigation was done adults in 30~40s, who live in Daejeon, from April 28 to May 12 and 519 questionnaires were collected back and used for the analysis.
The SPSS Program 10.0 was used as the analysis method and the followings are the summary of the results analyzed with Frequency Analysis, Chi-square, and ANOVA.
First, 52.2% of the adults think that the elderly life starts from the age of 60~65 and most responded that the most important thing and problem in the elderly life is the health problem.
Second, 86.7% of the adults responded that they are interested in the provision for the elderly life and most of the adults said that they are not willing to live with their married children in their elderly life. Till 1980s, people thought that it was ideal for the people to live with their children in the elderly life but now this shows that their thoughts about living with their children in the elderly life are changing.
Most responded that they should start preparing for their elderly life when they are in the 30s and as the interest in the elderly life increases, people start preparing for their elderly life from younger age which is in 30s. This shows that they have a will of solving their problems independently.
As for the consciousness of retirement age and reemployment, 93.3% responded that the current retirement age needs to be extended and they are willing to get another job after the retirement. There were many responses saying that they would work while they are healthy so this shows their strong will of the extension of the retirement age. In another word, the companies and government need to consider the retirement policy and also develop educational programs to satisfy their desires of reemployment as well as look into plans for the use of elderly labor.
Third, when the status of the provision for the elderly life was looked into, 67.4% of the adults were planning financial-wise and 44.3% of the adults responded that the reason for preparing financial-wise is because they do not want to rely on their children and live on their own in their elderly life. 61.5% of the adults were saving up for their elderly life and there was significant difference according to number of children, age, and monthly income. This shows that they are trying to spend wealthy and enjoyable leisure time in the elderly life.
Also, most responded that the government should play the main role to solve the elderly welfare problems and first promote the expansion of the welfare facilities for the elderly such as old people's home and sanitariums for the elderly.
