The purpose of this study was to study the effect of group counselling program for self-growth on self-esteem of young churchgoers to help each of young churchgoers grow up to be a man of fine character.
The research questions were posed as follows :
1) Is there any difference of the effect of group counselling program for self-growth according to the sex of young churchgoers?
2) Does group counselling program for self-growth have any effect on the development of the young churchgoers' self-esteem and its subordinate factors?
All data were collected from an experimental sample of 12 young churchgoers consisted of 6 boys and 6 girls and from a control sample of 12 young churchgoers consisted of 6 boys and 6 girls who did not participate in group counselling program for self-growth, and all participants attend a students' association of D church's Sunday school in the D Megalopolis. The program which was used in this study was based on 'Study Program for Self-growth' which was developed by Yoon, heung-seop and Lee, Hyeong-deuk in 1980, and this original program was recomposed for the young churchgoers according to the characteristic of this study. In this study, 'Measure of self-esteem', researched and developed by Choi, Bo-ga and Cheon, Kwi-yeon in 1993, was used as the means to measure the level of self-esteem. This is composed of 32 questions and has subordiante categories, that is, 'Overall self-esteem', 'Social self-esteem', 'Self-esteem in families' and 'Self-esteem in schools'. Likert scale from 1 point to 5 points was used as the measure of self-growth, and mean value and standard deviation were calculated according to the categories. And t-test was used to check the mean error between preliminary and post examinations.
Following are the results of this study :
1) Group counselling program for self-growth improved boys' 'Overall self-esteem', 'Self-esteem in families' and 'Self-esteem in schools' except 'Social self-esteem'. In case of girls, all categories of 'Overall self-esteem', 'Social self-esteem', 'Self-esteem in families' and 'Self-esteem in schools' were significantly improved. From this result, it is obvious that the program is effective for the improvement of young churchgoers' self-esteem and is more effective for girls than boys. And, generally, 'Self-esteem in families' got the most improved, the second most was 'Self-esteem in schools', the third was ''Social self-esteem' and the last was 'Overall self-esteem'.
2) Self-esteem of young churchgoers in the experimental sample who participated in group counselling program for self-growth was developed more than that of young churchgoers in the control sample who did not participate in the program. Group counselling program for self-growth significantly improved all of four categories of 'Overall self-esteem', 'Social self-esteem', 'Self-esteem in families' and 'Self-esteem in schools', and especially, this program was very effective for the improvement of 'Self-esteem in families'.
