This study have analysed the effect of group art therapies to the youth's emotional intelligence in an orphan asylum. This study aims at helping orphans cultivate their emotional intelligence through the program of group art therapies.
Also, this study purports to find a way to increase the practical use of KHTP(Kinetic House Tree Person) for measuring the change of emotional intelligence in the orphan under the program.
Thus, this study has focused on two matters for these purposes. First focus is on how the group art activity affect the cultivation of the orphan's emotion?
Second one is on the influence of group art therapies to the emotional intelligence of the orphan.
For this study, 9 young male students at the age of 12 to 14 in an orphan asylum, which is located in Dae-gu city, in Korea, participated in group art therapies. The program was held twice a week for the period of twelve weeks and each session lasted for ninety minutes. For the purpose of survey, this study used an E.Q test, the KHTP test and the program of group art therapies that the presenter of this thesis developed.
The results of this research are as following.
First, this study used the collage technique and a self-sentiment development technique to help the subjects understand their emotions. After the program, many of the subjects increased their confidence in recognizing selves.
Second, this study used a scribble technique for the subjects to express emotion. In this test, some of the subjects showed positive changes, while others show even regressions.
Third, scribble activities in a pair and cooperative clay works were used in relation to empathy. This showed some with positive changes and others with regressions, too.
Fourth, a mandala technique was used to control emotion in this program.
The half of the subjects showed a conspicuous progression in the control of emotion and some showed a fall in the capacity of control.
Fifth, a molding technique was used for application of emotion. There was little positive change in this area.
In summary, the program of group art therapies has both positive effect and negative effect. Also, the regression can be explained as part of a different process that is experienced in the process of art therapies. Thus, a succeeding study for more than 24 weeks will lead to more positive effect.
