      Purpose
      The Purposes of this study were threefold:(1) to review theories of the instructional supervision (2) to identify differences between current status and ideal state of instructional supervision in elementary school(3) and to propose some suggestions to improve instructional supervision in elementary school in korea on the basis of analysis of the findings of the study.
      Procedure
      A documentary method was used for theoretical review of instructional supervision. The main research effort employed the survey method. Questionnaire on instructional supervision was developed and administered. The population samples were 23 supervisors,39 school masters,and 181 teachers in elementary school to obtain the aata concerning current status and ideal state of instructional supervision. For the analysis of the data, x^(2) was used.
      Major Findings
      The major findings of the study were: (1) the current instructional supervision has focused on the evaluation,inspection,and control of teachers' instructional procedures and behaviors,(2)the ideal instructional supervision emphasized the improvement of curriculum, human relationships,communications,and self supervision or peer supervision.
      Conclusions
      This study concludes that considering the significant effects of instructional supervision on the development of education in elementary school, it is irnportant to improve instructional supervision. For one way to remedy the differences of current status and ideal state of instructional supervision in elementary school,this studyproposes some suggestions which might serve as guidelines for all elementar schools in upgrading the instructional supervision.
