The purpose of this study was to extend the knowledge based on the correlation of mother's response and children's emotional expression to children's self-regulatory capacity and social capability development by analyzing 346 different mothers various parenting styles: mother's responsive communicating styles differentiate children's emotional development. The Participants children are currently schooling at private kindergartens in Daegu.
The Method design involved a mixed method of quantitative and descriptive design. Specially, PACES(Parent toward Children's Expressiveness Scale) by Saarni(1990) was employed for mother's responsive styles. Children's self-regulatory capability was analyzed according to Self-Control Rating Scale (SCRS) by Kendal & Wilcox (1979). Additionally children's social capability was examined by Choi (1992). All analyses were conducted using SPSS for Windows 10.0, frequency and percentages, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, and Pearson's Correlation.
First, mothers tend to give more rigid responses toward a child's anger, concerns, inquisitiveness, and resentment while acceptable responses were given as children express sadness and fear. However, strict responses were presented toward children's joyful expression. Second, in general, highly educated mothers are more likely to be firm to children's inquisitiveness: Previously Masters or higher degree achievers are relatively more restrictive than high school diploma attained mothers are. Family forms also affect mother's responsive attitude. Mothers from extended families tend to response or manage more strictly to children's anger or joyful expression than mothers from nuclear families do. Third, mothers age's also another variable to promote children's self-regulatory capacity development. Thirty-year-old or older mother's children are less likely to have manipulative personality. Fourth, children's social competence development was related to parent's affection and disruption. The study shows that children whose parents are the owners of Bachelors or higher degree got higher scores on capability than the capability scores of the high school graduates children. Female children's instability toward parent's affection got higher scores than male children's. Fifth, there was a significant discovery in the relationship between mother's responsive approaches and children's self-control ability; the more a mother responses to a child strictly the more the child (girl) showed higher impulsiveness. Sixth, the study shows that there is a correlation between parent's responding styles and children's social competence development: mother's acceptable responses toward sadness that children expressed lowered female children's instability and disruption. In other words, the more frequently a mother's allowable reaction is given to children's hatred, the lower female children's instability.
This study shows how mother's responding technique affects children's social, emotional development, self-regulatory capacity, and social competence development. Mother's parenting styles are also correlated with their educational background, family forms, ages, and social reputations.
