The purpose of this research was to provide basic materials to help korean traditional plays be effectively utilized in early childhood educational place. It was investigated that how traditional plays such as Striking a stone, Playing yut (the Four-stick game), and Playing stone checkers had an impact on the social development of 5-year-old children.
    Research questions were as follows:
    1. How do traditional plays (Striking a stone, Playing yut, Playing stone checkers) have an impact on the social development of 5-year-old children?
1-1. How do traditional plays (Striking a stone, Playing yut, Playing stone checkers) have an influence on the cooperation of 5-year-old children?
1-2. How do traditional plays (Striking a stone, Playing yut, Playing stone checkers) have an effect on the understanding of others of 5-year-old children?
1-3. How do traditional plays (Striking a stone, Playing yut, Playing stone checkers) have an impact on the self-control of 5-year-old children?
1-4. How do traditional games (Striking a stone, Playing yut, Playing stone checkers) affect the peer interaction of a 5 year-old infant?
The subject of study were 60 5-year-old children that were registered in a kindergarten as an annex to P elementary school in Y city of the northern province of Kyungsang. An experimental group of 30 and a control group of 30 were assigned.
To assess the young children's social development, the measure of social development for young children by Sukkyung Kim (1989) was utilized. The tool was reconstructed by revision and supplementation of Social maturity test by Vineland (1977) and Social aptitude test by Jiao & Ji (1986). The program of traditional plays was implemented in an experimental group of 30 for 8 weeks, while the program was not conducted in a control group of 30. After the mean and the standard deviation of the measure in two groups before/after the program were computed, t-test was run to verify the difference between the two groups. ANCOVA (Analysis of Covariance) was run to test the difference of the mean of after scores that were adjusted from before scores, as a covariant factor.
The findings from the research were as follows:
First, traditional plays (Striking a stone, Playing yut, Playing stone checkers) had a statistically significant impact on the development of cooperation in 5-year-old children.
Second, traditional plays (Striking a stone, Playing yut, Playing stone checkers) had a statistically noteworthy influence on the development of understanding of other in 5-year-old children.
Third, traditional plays (Striking a stone, Playing yut, Playing stone checkers) had a statistically considerable effect on the development of self-control in 5-year-old children.
Fourth, traditional plays (Striking a stone, Playing yut, Playing stone checkers) effected the development of peer interaction in 5-year-old children with a statistical significance.
