The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mathematics learning through investigation on mathematical concepts and problem solving of children. The research questions study;
1. What effects do mathematics learning through participatory investigation activities have on mathematical concepts?
1-1. What effects do mathematics learning through participatory investigation activities have on the classification concept?
1-2. What effects do mathematics learning through participatory investigation activities have on the measurement and seriation concept?
1-3. What effects do mathematics learning through participatory investigating activities have on the numerical concept?
2. What effects do mathematics learning through participatory investigation activities have on problem solving?
The subjects of this study were 40 children from 4-5 of K & G public kindergartens located in Damyang. There was no statistically meaningful difference in mathematical concepts and problem solving which were given as pretest to the experimental group and the control group.
The test for the mathematical concept which Park, Sangsook(1998) has redesigned based on young children learning readiness test(1998) that Korean Educational Development Institute devised to estimate children's mathematical concept was used in this study, the test for mathematical problem solving which Kim, Huynjoo(2000) has developed, was used to measure problem solving.
Mathematics learning through participatory investigation activities for the experimental group included a field trip, individual or group investigations in real situations, group discussion, while the control group had a large group discussion led by the teacher. The treatment were conducted 19 times in total for the period of eight weeks. The data collected from the pretest and post test were analyzed by t-test using SAS program.
The results of this study are as follows.
1. Mathematics learning through participatory investigation activities meaningfully improved children's mathematical concepts.
In particular, among the sub concepts of the mathematical concepts the children had, classification, measurement, and seriation were promoted, while there appeared no meaningful differences in the numerical concepts.
2. Mathematics learning through participatory investigation activities meaningfully enhanced children's problem solving.
The result of the study has showed mathematics learning through participatory investigation activities is effective in promoting the mathematical concepts and problem solving of the children.
This study indicates, mathematical activities should be accomplished in circumstances meaningful to children themselves in which mathematical activities are based on participation, manipulation and investigation of children. Besides rather than active the effects of mathematical activities through investigation on mathematical attitudes, interests, mathematical terms children have in future study, should be explored.
