The purpose of the study was to a study of family support and parenting stress of children with developmental disability. The focus of the program concerning family support based on the feature of family with developmental disabilities would help to find the skill about that the family with developmental disabilities can put to practical use. So, the study was for researching about the feature of family support, parenting stress and the relationship between them.
The subjects were 398 parents of children with autism, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and developmental disabilities in Taegu, Kyungbook, Seoul, Kyongki, Pusan, and Kyongnam. In order to measure the feature of family. support and parenting stress relationship questionnaires which was developed by Rhee & Lee's and by Abidin. For statistical analysis of data t-test, F -test, and Duncan test was used.
The results of the study were as follows: 1. The size of supportive members of family was average 5.2 people and the range of 0∼13. 2. The type of family support of developmental disabilities was that the husband, parents in law, maternal parents, people in the religious community, their friends. 3. There was difference in the degree of family support on the developmental disabilities according to the family type. The type of family support was informational support, emotional support and personal care. Maternal parents offered the majority of informational support and husbands offered the majority of emotional support and personal care. 4. There was no difference in parenting stress on the developmental disabilities according to the child I s school age and preschool age. 5. There was no difference in parenting stress on the developmental disabilities according to the family type. 6. There was difference in parenting stress on the developmental disabilities according to the child I s type. The parenting stress of parents with autistic children was higher than with mental retardation, cerebral palsy, under the age of eight years old. 7. The more family support available was related to the amount of parenting stress. Therefore, to reduce a parenting stress, they need to increase the amount of family support. 8. There was no difference in parenting stress on the developmental disabilities according to the member of family with developmental disabilities. 9. There was difference in parenting stress on the developmental disabilities according to type of family support. Therefore, if we offer parent of developmental disabilities substantial support, or if we offer emotional support to the child I s parents, their stress would be reduced.
