The purpose of this study is to find out the developmental tendency of conception of space in accordance with the child's age and sex.
For this purpose, the problem to be raised are as follows :
How dose the child's conception of space reflect the developmental tendencies?
1. Is there any difference in accordance with the child's age in the conception of space?
2. Is there any difference in accordance with the child's sex in the conception of space?
This study has been done to 140 children of three to seven-year-old in age. The data was collected randomly at C elementary school located in Kang-dong Gu and Y kindergarten located in Dong-jak Gu.
As for the method of study, perception by tactility, drawing figures and changing knots to measure the conception of topological space, transforming of diamond shapes, horizontal and vertical lines to measure the conception of Euclidean space that Piaget and Inhelder manufactured in 1956 are used.
As for the method of investigation, this researcher executed private interviews.
The results from the experiment are analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Scheffe of SPSS for percepting any difference in accordance with age, by calculating the number of children belonged to each developmental stage according to ages with percents.
And the period achieving the conception is defined as the age when 75 percent of children in an age group succeeds in achieving the conception of space.
The difference in accordance with the child's sex in the conception of space is analyzed by t-test of SPSS.
The results achieved from this study are as follows:
First, as the children's ages increase, developmental degrees of topological conception and euclidean conception develop(**p<.01).
The period of the child achieving conception of space is emerged from the topological conception of space showing entire development in 6 years old, euclidean in 9∼10 years old, whole in 7 years old.
Second, the developmental degrees in accordance with the child's sex in the conception of space didn't show a significant difference(p>.05).
