The purpose of this study were to intestigate the relation among mother's acceptance of emotional expression, children's emotional maladjustment behavior and children's prosocial behavior.
The subjects for this study were 205 5-years-old preschooler and their mothers in total four kindergarten located in In-Chon, Buchon, Suwon and Bun-dang Gu. Sung-nam.
For the study on the mother's acceptance of emotional expression, I applied Saarni(1990) Parent Attitude toward Children's Expressiveness Scale. For the study on the children's emotional maladjustment behaviors, I referred to child behavior checklist by Y. Achenbach(1978) and emotional maladjustment checklist by Quay(1972) and I included withdrawl, hyperaction, aggressions, retreat and obsessive-cmpulsions in the children's emotional maladjustment behavior variables. And I reapplied The Skill Situation Measure of Mcgnnis & Goldstein(1990), used by Rhee, Won Young and others for the study of children's social nature reform in 1992, to this study about the children's prosocial behavior.
To do the statistical analysis was used SPSS/PC+, the data were analyzed by t verification, F verification, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and Scheffe method for post-hoc comparision.
The major findings of this study were as follows;
1. Mother's acceptance of emotional expression was differed by the subordinate factor of emotional expression. There were difference in mother's acceptance of emotional expression by the children's gender and mother's educational background.
2. Children's emotional maladjustment behavior was differed by the children's gender and mother's educational background. The obsessive-compulsion in the children's emotional maladjustment behavior variables showed a significant difference by their own mother's the presence of employment.
3. Children's prosocial behavior was also differed by the children's gender and mother's educational background.
4. Children's emotional maladjustment behavior was negatively related to mother's acceptance of emotional expression. In the correlation between mother's acceptance of emotional expression and children's emotional maladjustment behavior, boys were more influenced than girls.
5. Children's prosocial behavior was positively related to mother's acceptance of emotional expression. In the correlation between mother's acceptance of emotional expression and children's prosocial behavior, boys were more influenced than girls.
6. It was found that mother's acceptance toward children's negative emotional expression had a more important effect on children's emotional maladjustment and prosocial behavior than mother's acceptance toward children's positive emotional expression.
