The purpose of this research is to investigate how fostering pets affects a childs empathy toward, and fondness for, animals. To achieve these goals, the following research questions and hypotheses were set up:
Research Question 1. What difference is there in the ability to feel empathy, depending on whether they have experience in fostering pets or not?
Hypothesis 1. Children who have participated in fostering animals could receive more points on empathy than the children who have not participated.
Research Question 2. Among children who have participated in fostering pets, there could be a difference in points on empathy depending on gender.
Research Question 3. What difference is there in developing fondness for animals in children, depending on whether they have experience in fostering pets or not?
Hypothesis 2. Children who have participated in fostering animals could receive more points on forming fondness for pets than the children who have not participated.
Research Questions 4. Among children who have participated in fostering pets, there could be a difference in points on forming fondness for animals depending on gender.
To test the above-mentioned research questions and hypothesis, 30 children of 5 years old(69.47 5 years old months old on average) from M. kindergarten, were selected through wireless phone contact and some educational activities applying the research were set up.
The pet animals used were a pair of guinea-pigs(male and female) who were gentle and active, and 5 different sized turtles. They were put in a nice area with ample sunshine where children could easily access and spend time with them. Experiments were conducted a total of 30 times, 4 or 5 times a week for 8 weeks, from June to July 2000.
For the research, two research instruments were used. An empathy evaluation instrument, used previously Jacquelyn Mize and Garry W. Ladd in 1988, was used after translation and revision. And to review the degree of animal fondness, an instrument, used previously by Melson, Peet and Sparks in 1991, was used after translation and revision.
Data was statistically processed by an SAS program, and frequency, percentage, Chi-square evaluation and t-evaluation were used to investigate the degree of childrens empathy and ability to form fondness for animal.
The results of the research are as follows:
First, children who participated in the fostering of pets received higher points in the degree of empathy.
Second, children who participated in the fostering of pets showed no difference in the degree of empathy, depending on gender of child.
Third, children who participated in the fostering of pets received higher points in the ability to form fondness for animals.
Fourth, children who participated in the fostering of pets showed no difference in the ability to form fondness for animals, depending on the gender of the child.
