    The purposes of this study were to provide the basic data for counseling of parents and health guidance of the pupil and to promote children's health and to prevent children's depression by understanding school age children's depression level and health state.
    The design utilized for this study was the descriptive survey research.
    Data were collected from February 1 to 10, 2002. A sample of 378(5th, 6th grade) elementary school students participated in this study.
    The instrument used for this study were the Children's Depression Inventory(CDI) which was developed by Cho, S. C. and Lee, Y. S.(1990) and simplified Cornell Medical Index(CMI) which was developed by Nam, H. C.(1965). The reliability of this instruments were that the depression scale was Cronbach's α=.83 and that the health state scale was Cronbach's α=.76.
    The data were analyzed with the SAS program using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, DMR test, Pearson's correlation coefficient.
    The results of this study were as follows;
    1. The mean score of children's depression level was 12.52. This score was lower than preceding domestic research but it was the same as patient group level of foreign research.
    2. The mean score of psychological health state(M=0.35) showed higher than the mean score of physical health state(M=0.10). This means that psychological health state is not better than the physical health state.
    3. The relation between children'depression level and health state showed pure interrelation(γ=.591, p=.000). It means that children's depression affects much to their health. And children'depression has much more to do with psychological health(γ=.579) than physical health state(γ=.504).
    4. The general characteristics of children and their parents affected children'depression level. what showed significant difference in statics(p〈.05) were; existence of parents, economic status, harmony of family members, perceptibility of health, smoking experience, friends, satisfaction of school life and after school activity, anxiety, father's job, drinking level of mother, parents's attitude of education.
    5. The general characteristics of children and their parents affected children's physical and psychological health state. The characters that have an influence on physical health state were(p〈.05); economic status, harmony of family members, perceptibility of health, smoking experience, friends, satisfaction of school life and after school activity, anxiety, drinking level of mother, parents's attitude of education. The characters that have an influence on psychological health state were(p〈.05); sex, school year, harmony of family members, perceptibility of health, friends, satisfaction of school life and after school activity, anxiety, age of parents, father's job, drinking level of mother, parents's attitude of education.
