The purpose of this study is to examine the current state of commercial high school English education in Korea and to make suggestions regarding ways to make it more effective by way of locating problems with the current system. Special reference is made to the characteristics of commercial high school students as learners of English.
For this study, I conducted a survey by having commercial high school students answer the questionnaire designed to grasp their reactions to various aspects of English education that they are receiving, which include syllabus, textbook, methods and techniques. Some of the major findings are as follows:
First, the findings suggest that the present objective of English education is not suitable to the commercial high school students. They show that the objective of English education for commercial high schools should be modified in consideration of the level and the characteristics of the students attending the schools.
Second, there is a need to develop an English textbook which is specially designed for commercial high school students, which would be distinct from the mainstream English textbooks being used at non-vocational high schools. Commercial high school students are different from non-vocational high school students in terms of needs, motivation and the expected level of achievement in English learning. The survey results show that many students believe that the level of the English textbook being currently used at commercial high schools is too high for them. It is proposed that the content of textbooks for commercial high school students should be much easier than that of the textbooks being used at non-vocational high schools in terms of the level and complexity in grammar, vocabulary, and reading materials.
Third, the findings show in one way or another that students will greatly benefit from more communicatively oriented activities. Many of the students' responses suggest that most teachers are still dependent upon the traditional teaching methods like the grammar-translation method, which is likely to leave their students unmotivated. It is proposed that teachers need to engage students in more communicative activities embedded in meaningful contexts of language use; when students are placed in a relatively comfortable class environment and encouraged to draw upon their own experiences and information they are familiar with, they will be able to enhance their communicative ability in English more effectively. The use of activities like games, role-play, and drama which make use of simple, everyday language is recommended.
