The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of traffic safety education role-playing on traffic safety problem-solving thinking and traffic safety knowledge of kindergarten children.
To achieve this purpose, 47 kindergarten children aged 5 were sampled in Seoul-city and they were assigned to the experimental group and control group.
The traffic safety education role-playing programmes composed of 8 activities were treated to experimental group for 4 weeks and the test of traffic safety problem-solving thinking and traffic safety knowledge were administered to the experimental group and control group for pre-test and post-test.
The collected data were coded and analysed by SPSSPC+ programmes, The t-test was used to analyze the effects of traffic safety education role-playing activities on traffic safety problem-solving thinking and traffic safety knowledge.
〈Research problem 1〉
Is there any difference in traffic safety problem-solving thinking between the experimental group and control group?
The major finding of research problem 1 was as follow :
It was found that the post-test score of the experimental group (M=6.88, SD=1.57) were significantly higher than that of control group (M=3.09, SD=1.88) in traffic safety problem-solving thinking〔t=7.51, P<.01〕.
〈Research problem 2〉
Is there any difference in traffic safety knowledge between the experimental group and control group?
There are safety walking, crosswalks with traffic lights or without traffic lights, transportation usage in minor elements of traffic safety knowledge.
The main discoveries made in research problem 2 were as follows :
First, it was found that the post-test score of the experimental group (M=3.50, SD=1.14) were significantly higher than that of control group (M=1.83, SD=1.15) in safety walking 〔t=5.00, P<.01〕.
Second, it was found that the post-test score of the experimental group (M=3.04, SD=.86) were significantly higher than that of control group (M=2.00, SD=1.13) in crosswalk with traffic lights 〔t=3.57, P<.01 〕.
Third, it was found that the post-test score of the experimental group (M=5.00, SD=1.59) were significantly higher than that of control group (M=3.04, SD=1.02) in crosswalk without traffic lights 〔t=5.00, P<.01〕.
Fourth, it was found that the post-test score of the experimental group (M=3.42, SD=.78) were significantly higher than that of control group (M=2.83, SD=.98) in using transportation〔t=2.29, P<.05〕.
Therefore, it could be said that traffic safety education role-playing were effective activities for the traffic safety problem-solving thinking and traffic safety knowledge of kindergarten children.
