The purposes of this study were to examine trend of reports on the gender-role stereotypes through media sports such as television sports news, broadcast, and sports articles in newpaper ti investigate the relationship between the reading of gender-role stereotypes through media sports and the degree of media sports audience.
The subjects of this study were divided into two areas ; media sports and media sports audience. Media sports were analyzed on sports news, sports broadcast, daily newspapers. Sports news were chosen on KBS during September 2, through November 30, 1996, and sports broadcast on final leagues of 96-97 BASKETBALL BIG FESTIVAL and 97 KOREA VOLLEYBALL SUPER LEAGUE, sports sections of Four Korean daily newspapers such as The Chosun, The Choong-Ang, The Hankook, and The Dong-A which were published January 1 st to December 31 st, 1996. Media sports audiences who were over 10 year old aged, living in Seoul area were selected by Systematic Stratified Cluster Random Sampling.
The subjects of the study were total 580 sport related audiences; 308 males and 272 females.
The measurements of media sports were investigated using categories of qualitative and quantitative analyzes which Duncan, Messner, Jensen(1990), Duncan, Hasbrook(1988) used on their studies. Measurement of the relationship between the degree of media sports audience and interpretation of sex-role stereotypes through the sport related media were examinated by using the scales of Korean Broadcasting Institute(1995), Sook-Ja & Yang-rea(1996) and Yang-rea(1997).
Statistics Employed for data analysis were Desciptive, Multiple Classification Analysis and ANCOVA using the SPSS/PC+ 4.0 statistical package.
Based on these producers and results, the following conclusions were warranted:
First, trend of reports through television sports news reflected on gender-role stereotypes. That was, quantitatively, the amount of broadcasting about female athletes were more than that about male athletes. And opening frame and adaptation using language were qualitatively shown on mens traits than womens traits.
Second, trend of reports through television sports broadcast were quantitatively shown no differences between mens competitions and womens one. And composition frame and using language of sports broadcast were qualitatively shown on mens traits. These trends also affected on gender-role stereotypes.
Third, trend of reports through sports articles in newapaper also influenced on gender-role stereotypes. The amount of articles about mens athletes were more than that of womans quantitatively. And an explained languages about sports were shown the explanation on relation closely mens traits than womens traits qualitatively.
Fourth, the degree of media sports audience was shown a few effect on reading in term of gender-role stereotypes. That was, the degree of media sports audience was shown a few effect on message reading about media sports.
In order words, the degree of media sports audience was shown a few relation to reading about gender-role stereotypes resulted as dominant or negotiated reading.
