The purpose of this study is to examine how children's reality perception in different from depending on the pattern and format of TV program and to clarify distinction of children`s social reality according to their reality perception on the familian TV program, parental mediation and communication pattern.
To achieve these purposes, the following research tasks have been established :
Research task 1. What's the difference in children's reality perception depending on the pattern of TV program?
Research task 2. What`s the difference in children's social reality of the familian TV program depending on the level of reality perception?
Research task 3. What's the difference in children`s reality perception and judgement of the pattern of TV program depending on formal difference of TV program?
Research task 4. What's the difference in children's reality perception depending on the pattern of parental communication and mediation?
In this research 342 preschoolers(5 years old) from 6 kindergarten located at Seoul and Kyongki province and their mothers were included respectively (for reference, male :168 preschoolers, female :174 preschoolers )
Average ages of the children's were 5.4 years old (SD=3.2)
The research tools for the children's reality perception used for this study were the following:
The Questionnaires which wright, Huston, Reitz and Piemyat(1994) used for mother's communication have been translated and fitted into Korean reality.
The research tools for the mother's communication pattern and mediation were based on Austin(1993), Weavour(1994) and Seo(1998).
The results of this study are as follows:
First, These were significant differences in children`s reality perception, depending on the pattern of TV program. Accordingly what the children believe that television figures really exist were documentary, news, drama, educational.
The level of reality perception was different from depending on the pattern of television program and it was higher in the documentary, news and educational program but the level of identification perception was very low.
In the meantime, the former was lower in the carton or drama but the latter was higher.
In case of cartoons, drama and educational program, the mere audience time was, the higher level of reality perception was. Accordingly, the children watch television long time were likely to believe that the contents of television exist really.
Second, these were significant relations' between the level of reality perception and social reality. The children has the higher level of reality perception were more apt to recognize that television figures really exist.
Third, These were some differences in children's reality perception depending on the different format based on the same contents of TV program.
Lastly, As the result of analyzing the children's reality perception depending on mother's communication pattern and mediation, this research showed that mothers used control oriented pattern mostly and these were considerable difference in the children's reality perception accordingly to communication pattern.
The children of control oriented mothers showed the highest score of reality and social perception and they recognized the figures in the television as reality but the children of conversation oriented mothers showed the lowest score of these and they did not believed all the figures in television as reality.
This research showed the most affirmative effect on the children`s perception is mother's mediation which mother communicated with the children or recommended good program to them before after or during watching television.
