여성의 외모주의와 성형의료산업 = (The) relation between women's obsession over appearance and the cosmetic surgery industry in the comtemporary Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 성형의료산업과 여성의 외모주의와의 관계를 통해 현대사회의 기술자본이 여성의 몸을 훈육해가는 구조를 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 한국의 성형의료자본의 성격을 분석하고 그것이 여성의 지지를 받으며 제도화되는 과정을 살펴보았다.
구체적으로 3장에서는 성형의료기술의 젠더적 토대와 자본화 경향을 추적하고 이어 4장에서는 성형의료기술을 받아들이는 여성들의 태도와 그것을 통해 이루어지는 외모주의-기술주의의 제도화 과정을 분석한다. 그럼으로써 여성의 몸에 개입하는 외모주의 이데올로기와 성형의료기술의 관계, 그리고 그 복합적인 연결망 속에 감춰져 있는 기술자본의 논리 구조를 도출한다.
연구과정은 성형외과 전문의 5인과 성형을 원하는 여성 및 성형을 경험한 여성 28인을 대상으로 한 심층면접을 주된 조사 방법으로 채택했으며, 그 외 인터넷 채팅, 메일링을 이용한 설문조사, 성형관련 사이트의 게시물, 여성잡지의 성형관련 광고, 신문기사, 성형외과학 교과서 및 성형 안내 책자 등을 통한 문헌조사를 실시했다.
연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국의 성형의료산업은 외모와 관련된 육체 산업의 연장선상에 있으며 따라서 의사 개개인의 입장을 뛰어넘는 생존방식으로서의 이윤 추구 행위에 맞닿아 있다. 둘째, 이러한 상업성은 성형의료기술이 여성의 외모주의에 관여하는 방식을 방향짓는데, 그것은 기존의 가부장적 여성성 즉 외모집중적 이데올로기의 수용과 기술주의적 관념의 유포이다. 이로써 정상적으로 기능하는 여성의 몸이 질병 개념을 얻고, 기술적으로 해체되어 이상적인 여성미를 수치화하고, 끊임없이 새로운 기술을 채용함으로써 미용성형에 대한 의학의 독점적 권력화와 기술주의적 관념의 확립을 가져온다. 셋째, 위와 같은 관계는 일상생활에 영향을 미치는 담론 속에서 문화적으로 세력화된다. 그럼으로써 한편으로 외모주의적 담론을 통한 성형시장의 확대를, 다른 한편으로 기술주의적 담론을 통한 권위와 권력의 확보를 결과한다. 넷째, 이러한 성형의료기술자본의 성격은 여성의 외모변형 의지를 정당화하고 용이하게 하며 외모주의-기술주의의 제도화 과정에 이데올로기적 배경으로 작용한다. 외모주의-기술주의의 제도화는 외모의 권력화, 외모의 쾌락화, 외모고통으로부터의 해방의 경험을 통해 여성의 합의 하에 이뤄지고 여성들의 불만과 저항은 제도 안으로 영입된다. 다섯째, 그 결과 여성의 몸은 하나의 사물로 대상화되어 동일한 문화적 상징과 문화적 의미형식이 각인되고 따라서 욕구가 동질화되고 외모가 획일화되어 기술자본이 요구하는 몸이 완성되는 것이다. 그것은 사람들이 자기 자신을 혐오하게 되고 그 결과 무엇을 사고 무엇을 해야 하는지를 쉽게 설득 당하는 상태를 말함이다. 여섯째, 여성들의 합의에 기초한 훈육체계일지라도 균열의 지점은 발견된다. 여성의 성형행위는 여성을 미(美)/추(醜), 자연미/인공미로 나누어 여성의 힘을 타고난 외모에 국한시키려는 가부장적 이분화의 정치공세에 대한 항의가 되기도 한다. 동시에 성형을 통해서도 극복할 수 없고 오히려 더욱 종속되는 가부장적 미 규범의 실체를 인식하게 된다. 또한 상업화된 의료에서 빚어지는 경제적 불평등의 재현은 기술을 통한 미의 평등신화를 위태롭게 한다.
결론적으로 여성의 성형 행위는 개인적인 문제라기 보다는, 외모 열등감을 조장하는 가부장적 소비자본주의와 그 해결책으로 제시되는 의료기술자본의 정치적 담합에서 비롯되며, 그럼에도 불구하고 여성 주체는 정확한 현실 인식과 최선의 선택으로 성형을 결정한다. 모순적이게도 바로 이러한 자발성이 기술 자본이 요구하는 순종적인 몸을 받아들이게 되는 중심 요인이 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This dissertation is to investigate the disciplining structure of modern society's technology capital on human body through the relation between cosmetic surgery business and women's obsession over the good-looking.
For this, in chapter three, I trace the gender foundation and capitalization trend of cosmetic surgery business, and in chapter four, I analyse the women's attitudes toward cosmetic surgeries and the contents of the power which is acquired by having the cosmetic surgeries. From that, I draw out the relation between a good-looking ideology and cosmetic surgery and the logic of capitalism hidden inside the complex network. Especially, the starting point of this research is in the assumption that women are logical beings who can understand their own social situation. In addition, it also includes the problem of social suffering and equality in connection with the social power relations.
I choose a depth interview as a main research method, which includes five cosmetic surgery doctors, and twenty eight women who either want or haves had cosmetic surgeries. And a literature survey includes an internet chatting, a mailing survey, board messages on cosmetic surgery web sites, ads on women magazines, newspaper articles, and textbooks and booklets on the cosmetic surgery.
The results of this research are as follows : first, the cosmetic surgery in Korea is on the extended line of physical business on good-looking and also related with the profit-seeking action for living beyond one's position for the individual doctors. Next, this business character is crucial for directing how cosmetic surgery can intrude into women's good-looking ideology. And this is distribution of technology discourse and acceptance of patriarchal femininity, which is also the good-looking ideology. Third, this relation gains its power in everyday discourses so that it brings about the expansion of the cosmetic surgery market through good-looking discourse and also the acquisition of power and prestige through technological discourse. Fourth, this character of cosmetic surgery technology capital justifies and makes easy women's will of cosmetic surgery. Supposed that the most influential motive of cosmetic surgery is to get over self-despise and social disadvantages from good-looking ideology, the decision for plastic surgery is rational and realistic action for those who try to get aside its manipulation of mass media and good-looking discourse. Fifth, people who had cosmetic surgeries show intensification of good-looking ideology and positive acceptance of their external appearance, feeling the power growing within their group. In this case, the notion of their own looking is defined by self pleasure in spite of other's evaluation or perspective so one can decide matters on the body actively. Sixth, there exists a cracking point even if it is a disciplining system through agreement. Cosmetic surgery can be one way of protesting against a patriarchal dualism between beauty/ugliness, natural beauty/artificial beauty which tries to confine women's power only in the natural beauty. On the other hand, this also means that women recognize reality of patriarchal beauty norms which can not be overcome by cosmetic surgery. And the reproduction of economic inequality from commercialized medical technology is endangering the myth of equality of beauty through technology.
In short, cosmetic surgery for a woman is not a personal matter. It is more from political conspiracy between consumptive capitalism that produces self-despise and medical technology chose as its solution. Nevertheless, the female subjects decide to have cosmetic surgeries as a realistic understanding and a best choice. Ironically, this volunteering action is a main reason of accepting an obedient body which technological capital demands.
