The purposes of this research were to search for connectivity between appreciation and composition, and to suggest teaching plans reflecting the connection for forming musical concepts in 6th graders of elementary schools.
For this purpose, the research was carried out in the following way.
First, musical concepts were abstracted corresponding to the level of 6th graders of elementary schools. They were 2 concepts about rhythm, 2 about melody, 1 about harmony, 3 about form, 1 about tempo, 1 about dynamic and 1 about tone, so total 11 concepts.
Second, musical pieces and contents to be composed that reflected clearly these musical concepts were selected.
Third, steps of connecting appreciation with composition for forming these musical concepts were developed. For the connection between appreciation and composition, 7 steps in a appreciation class and 5 steps in a composition class were reorganized to be suited to the present research as follows.
There were largely four steps, which were preparation, appreciation, composition and evaluation. In the 'preparation' (1st) step, the focus and goals on musical concepts were provided through an impromptu performance or the presentation of study results. In the 'appreciation' (2nd) step, students understood musical concept through appreciation focused on musical concepts. After playing the theme melody or rhythm, students discussed method of making method of music piece. Musical concepts were to be fully understood through introducing concepts. In the ‘composition' (3rd) step, students applied and developed the musical concepts which were learned from the appreciation step. After situations related to the musical concepts were set up, students composed music pieces. By playing, students reflected on their music piece which contain the music concepts. In the evaluation (4th) step, how the concepts were understood and employed in the appreciation and composition steps was evaluated.
Fourth, applying the steps of connecting to teaching, 11 teaching plans were developed.
The followings are the conclusions drawn from the research.
First, when appreciation is connected with composition, students participate more in the learning activities, and play active roles and respond sensitively to musical expression elements.
Second, appreciation, analyzing and imitating music pieces improve students' ability to compose.
Third, students can develop the habit to listen to music with imagination, which induces creative thinking.
Fourth, experiences in composition activities promote understanding of musical concepts, and consequently, enhance intellectual ability to listen to music.
Fifth, teacher can know that understand degree of students' musical concepts through music pieces.
Sixth, by applying concepts learned from appreciation to composition, students can establish a solid base of musical concepts. Thus, this is suitable for the appreciation class of 6th graders of elementary schools for forming musical concepts.
