Because of the rapid progress of both industrialization and capitalization, and women's participation in the labor market, the number of married working women has rapidly been increasing internationally for the past 50 years.
In spite of these participations of women in public affairs and social roles, married working women are, for the most part, faced with double role conditions such as housework or child care as well as their work at the same time. For this reason, married working women experience role trouble caused by women's economical activity.
Therefore, the purposes of this study are to investigate the actual conditions of double role among married working women, to discuss various types of troubles by role burden, and finally to lay out a scheme to lighten the burden of married working women. The method of this study is analyzing the data of collected 237 copies of distributed 450 copies, conducting a questionnaire survey of married working women in Daejon from April 15 to May 8, 2002. The summarized results of this study are as follows.
First, a home economic problem is the largest reason why married women find work. Besides, because there is not difference between men's and women's monthly income averages, it is showed that women's income contribute greatly to the home economy.
Second, based on the results of the research on the allotted actual condition of housework or child care, about over 80% have a role burden because of excessive inequality to women. Comparing their housework time, there is not a wide difference between the women in an advanced country and Korea. However, considering the preparation of a social system and husbands' support, there is a wide difference in the qualitative side. In the aspect of supporting their parents, it is showed that they seldom have the burden of support their parents, because most of the married working women don't live together their parents.
Third, because, as stated above, there is an excessive inequality to women in housework, it is showed that married working women have many difficulties from their work such as, in order of percentage, night work, the hour for going to work and leaving their work, a business trip, and dining together with their fellow workers after work.
Forth, according to the recognition on the burden of double role of married working women, it is showed that in order of percentage, they experience mental and physical exhaustion, the education of their children, lack of time, a heavy burden of housework. Besides, there is little dissatisfaction from the relationship of family members because of family's strong support. But in spite of the excessive inequality in housework or child care, based on the results of this research, it is showed that the level of the burden is very low(2.91% on the average).
Whether they live together with their parents or not, there is little difference in the burden of double role of married working women. It is reasonable result that the younger their children is, the more their burden is, because there is a deficiency of facilities for child care and nursery.
Finally, in the scheme to lighten the burden of double role, the national support gains the largest percentage in bringing up children.
Like advanced country, through various supporting service, it is necessary to provide married working women with the basis to demonstrate their self-realization and a desire to accomplish. This study shows that married working women are faced with various problems because of performing two lifes at home and work place, which may raise a serious problem in the welfare of all family members.
If it were not for the change of the recognition of family members as well as social system, married working women would experience a vicious circle that cannot give satisfaction from both home and work place. Therefore it is necessary to prepare national policy for child care.
In conclusion, the suggestion on succeeding research is as follows:
① To know the difference of the role recognition between the men and women, it is necessary to study the actual conditions of double role among married working women from husband's viewpoint. ② To support concretely married working women, it is necessary to study the burden of double role by occupation.
