Brahma and Indra worshiped as the gods in Brahmanism before Buddhism arose, served and guarded the Buddha's preaching in sutras appearing together within Buddhism. In the sutras on Sakyamuni's life they take special roles; Brahma persuades him to preach and Indra serves the Sarira as well as taking a general role as gods of devas. Some Iconographic features in Buddhist art are based on these typical roles.
In India and Gandhara, Brahma and Indra are shown in the art on Buddha's life. Followed the Brahmana and Ksatriya in the Caste system Brahma appears disciplinant and Indra appears noble. Including the art on Buddha's life, the statues with Buddha on the right and left side by Brahma and Indra originates the form of Buddha triad.
Even the art on Buddha's life rarely remains in China, in the 6th century, many records describe the icon of Brahma with shell-shaped head Nagye-Bumwang(螺? The shell-shaped head of Brahma expresses the instruction of Buddhism and the origin of the icon which comes from the appearance of Brahmanas worshiping Brahma. This kind of Brahma image can be classified according to its costume, and the changes of the style have also general issue with other Buddhist sculpture. On the other hand, there is another example of Brahma image in the early Unified Silla dated on 689 A.D. It is two figures that hold buildings in the stone monument with Amitabha inscribed the year of Gichuk(己丑). The Brahma called 'Brahma holding up a palace' in the thesis has much possibility to be formed by the scenes from many sutras including Saddarma-pundarika sutra(法華經); Brahma entreats for Buddha's sermon dedicating his palace.
Although the Brahma and Indra statues of Tang dynasty are seldom discovered, we can find that the icons and the style reflect traditional Chinese elements through records and mural paintings in the era. The images of Brahma and Indra in Chinese official uniform, emperor clothing and feminine garments produced during the high Tang, were very different from those of Indra and Central Asia. The Chinese icons of Brahma and Indra affected on those produced in the late Unified Silla.
In the Unified Silla, Brahma and Indra of Buddhism were accepted and produced based on the traditional religion on the gods of Heaven and the prevalence of the multitude of deites under Avatamsaka(華嚴). Five-direction-Guardians(五方神將)of Sachonwang-sa temple(四天王寺, the temple of Four Heavenly Kings)in the early Unified Silla have been presumed to include Indra. However, the status just consisted of five armed figures with bows not Indra nor Four Heavenly Kings according to GwanJeong sutra(灌頂經). Rather, in the late Unified Silla, the combination of Indra and Four Heavenly Kings around, which expresses the world of Mt, Sumeru in Buddhism.
It is needed to analyze in two ways on the Brahma and Indra of Sokkuram(石窟庵, late 8th century), which is the analysis on the status themselves and on the arrangement within the whole structure. At first, the icons and the style are from the description of the edited Dharani sutra(陀羅尼集經)by Atigosa(阿地瞿多). Their origins, meanings, and objects such as camera, kundika, vajra are common to the international motifs at those times. These reliefs have some elements comparable with the Brahma and Indra status of Tenpyo period in Japan, as well as respect of icon and style keep old fashioned and conservative aspects. This contrary aspects of the Brahma and Indra reliefs in Sukkuram between the contemporary and conservatory style explain the originality of the sculpture in the Unified Silla.
The design of the Sukkuram cave is similar to the circular plan of Buddhist deities pervading in East Asia of that period. However, the location of the right and left and the arrangement of Brahma and Indra reliefs are different from other works and it is another character of Sukkuram. It is true that the icons of Brahma and Indra in Sukkuram are closely connected with the edited Dharani sutra, but the location and the arrangement are more related to Avatamasaka sutra or Avatamasaka ideas which was prevalent in the Unified Silla. It is consistent with the religious tendency of the patrons to the construction of Sukkuram toward Avatamasaka, the character of the principal Buddha and the major roles of Brahma and Indra in Avatamasaka sutra.
Brahma and Indra statues in the late Unified Silla have not been recognized except for a few reliefs on pavilion stupas. We can rediscover Brahma and Indra among the images which have been recognized Buddhisttvas or devas. Brahma and Indra in the period are classified into four types by the costume, the holding of scared goods and their posture. Usually the engraved Brahma and Indra on the stone pagodas or Sartra casket adopt the icons of the status from those of Sukkuram. On the other hand, the images on the pavilion stupas or the pedestal of stone Buddha take Chinese style in their robes and pedestals. The icons of following era, Goryeo. Compared with Chinese or Japanese sculptures it is the distinguished character of Korean Brahma and Indra sculpture which succeeded to the Sukkuram' canon instead of following the icons of the Esoteric Buddhism.
Brahma and Indra engraved on the stone buildings are the important elements to determine the character of the buildings combining other deities as Four Heavenly Kings or Vajrapani, etc...They have roles that establish the order of the Buddhist world or protect the inner contents of the stone buildings. The ways of combining other deities suggests the relationship with not only the kinds of the stone buildings but also the types of Brahma and Indra icons.
