(Carpenter, et al. 1981: Mayer.1985.1986).

Word problems in math require arithmetic calculation ability, arithmetic thinking power, and a student's math skills and thus help to improve problem solving ability a lot. They tend to be based on the situations taking place in everyday life and accordingly have been a great use in teaching symbolic ideas regarding math relations. Their value has been widely recognized.
There are lots of reasons why word problems are considered to be a very meaningful problem solving tool; first, they can have a wide diversity of such elements as language, math structure, discovery tactics or strategy. Accordingly they can help to accomplish many math purposes including math problem solving, math communication and cooperative learning. In addition, they are excellent in their versatility including not only many math contents but also those of other subjects.
Let's take a look at the recent tendencies in math education. 'Math power' is emphasized, math education focuses on problem solving, and everyday life-related word problems are usually used as a problem solving tool. When it's not really necessary to provide word problems for problem-solving problems, 'problem solving, ' 'problems for the sake of problem solving' and 'word problems' are regarded as the same(Gang Si-jung, 1992).
Many students makes mistakes in the process of problem solving not because they do wrong calculation after they understand problems correctly but because they do not understand problems right in the understanding of the problem stage, which is followed by correct calculations. There have been many studies telling that students have lots of difficulties in understanding math problems, especially math problems. Despite these findings, math classes focus on the performance process such as calculation in problem solving(Carpenter et al. 1981; Mayer, 1985, 1986).
This study set out to make better problem solvers out of students by focusing on understanding of problems, providing various understanding-promoting activities, and by guiding students toward math-related problem reading and acquisition of language technique. Thus it was expected students would improve their problem solving ability. The study questions were set as follows:
A. Is there any relationship between the technique of problem understanding activities and problem solving ability?
B. Is there any difference between boys' and girls' problem solving ability according to the technique of problem understanding activities?
C. Is there any difference in time of problem solving according to the technique of problem understanding activities?
In the study, 60 students in the middle range in grades were selected through the test to decide the composition of the subject in order to study the relations between the technique of third graders' math word problem understanding and their problem solving ability. The subjects were divided into six groups consisting of five boys and five girls. Each of the groups was applied to with one of the six activities that were supposed to help understand a problem. The six activities included writing down the problem without numbers, reading the problem out loud twice, jumping to solving without no understanding-promoting activities, underlining words that seem important, thinking over for 30 seconds after reading the problem, and reading the problem and expressing it in one's own words. The groups were given tests, and their average scores were calculated for comparison and analysis.
The results were as follows:
First, the highest performance level was from the group that solved problems after reading them out loud twice and that underlined the words that seemed important.
Second, among the third graders who participated in the six different understanding-promoting activities for a better word problem solving, boys were better than girls in terms of problem solving ability. In particular, in the group that were instructed to solve problems after underlining the words that seemed important, the boys showed the greatest problem solving ability, and the gap between the boys and the girls was the biggest.
Third, the time required to solve problems was different according to the technique of problem understanding activities. The subjects needed less time when using their already accustomed activities and more time when adopting new activities such as underlining the words that seemed important.
In short, the third graders showed different levels of achievement in word problems according to the process to read and understand problems. In particular, the accustomed reading out loud since the lower grades in elementary school had great influence on students' word problem solving. Those students who were good at finding out important words in a sentence problem had better degree of understanding the problem and thus showed higher problem solving ability.
