To find the knowledge and attitude and their related factors of a general hospital nurses about the aging a questionnaire survey was made from 221 nurses from September 28th to October 12th, 2001. The questionnaire was filled by self-administered answer.
The results were as follows;
1. Among the respondents 58.4% experienced living with the elderly and 80.5% do not live with a elderly person presently. 41.1% answered that they have familiar elderly person nearby and 52.9% answered that their grandparents were alive.
2. Among the respondents 89.6% contacted with elderly person for nursing service. 59.7% participated in continuing education which dealt about nursing care for the elderly. 900% learned about the subjects related with the elderly during nursing school period As the name of subjects to deal with nursing care for the elderly, 68.8% was a part of nursing care for the adult and 31.2% learned by the name of nursing care for the elderly. As the most favorite field of nursing 57.7% preferred to nursing care for the adult while only 5.4% preferred nursing care for elderly.
3. By the measurement of knowledge about aging the rate to choose the correct answer for 25 questions related with aging was 52.4%. The rate for physical or physiological questions was 70.3%, while the rates were 40.3% for questions related with family and social aspect and 35.6% for questions related with psychological aspect.
4. The correlation between knowledge and attitude toward aging showed significant negative value. So the lower the score of knowledge was, the more negative the attitude of the respondents about aging was. Through univariate analysis variables which showed statistically significant correlation with attitude toward the elderly were score of knowledge about aging, the relation with elderly person to live together presently, the relation with elderly person to live together in the past and the relation with familiar elderly by person recently.
5. By stepwise multiple linear regression to find predictor of knowledge and attitude of the nurse about the aging. Significant variables related with the knowledge were attitude score toward the elderly and presence of familar elderly person nearby. Two variables explained 7% of the model. Significant variable related with the attitude was knowledge score of the respondents, and the model explained 27%.
In conclusion, the attitude of nurse toward the elderly person was related with the knowledge about aging. So more correct informations about aging must be provided to nurses to upgrade the quality of nursing toward the elderly, especially more education about psychological and sociological aspect of aging was required.
